Technics DJ Turntable - Guide to the SL-1210
The Technics SL-1210 has always been the ultimate DJ turntable
Technics turntables have made DJing as we know it today possible. In the early 80s, the Technics turntable was the necessary tool to generate DJ mixes for the first time, and scratching became possible with the 1210.
The Technics SL-1210 was especially appreciated for its powerful and reliable motor, which could be adjusted in speed via the pitch fader, setting this standard still in use today. This idea from Technics can be found in every DJ player today. Whether it's DJ CD players, DJ controllers, or the classic DJ turntables, each of these players has a pitch fader as a central element.
What makes the Technics turntable so special?
Thanks to the strong direct drive of the Technics turntable, it became possible to scratch vinyl records even in combination with a felt mat or slipmat. Technics revolutionized this drive and remains unmatched to this day. There are some DJ turntables with more powerful direct drive motors, but the precision and reliability are probably unmatched.
Another important detail is the unrivaled tonearm in its quality among DJ turntables. None of the known DJ turntables have reached this standard yet.
How good are Technics turntables?
For club use, the massive housing of the Technics turntable is also a great advantage, as it swings less and thus tends to have less feedback. Many of the so-called clones deceive with a simple plastic housing by loading them with additional weight in the form of a steel plate. It's generally better to add a bit more weight, but here too, not only quantity but also quality in the form of a solidly built housing matters.
Why are used Technics turntables so expensive?
Less considered, but still extremely important for maintaining the value of the Technics turntable, is the availability of Technics 1210 MK2 spare parts. Here too, Technics can score, and even almost 10 years after the last 1210s were delivered, the most important spare parts for Technics turntables are still available in various shops. Of course, it becomes increasingly difficult from year to year, and some spare parts, especially the less demanded ones, will gradually disappear from the market or from DJ shops, but for no other DJ turntable are spare parts available for so long after production stopped.
The same obviously applies to the SL-1200 MK2 as well as other Technics models such as the SL-1210 M3D, the SL-1210 MK, or even the SL-1210 M5G. With some minor exceptions also for limited models in gold like the SL-1200 LTD or the SL-1200 GLDE.
We recommend every owner of a Technics turntable to purchase the most important spare parts as long as they are still available in the shop. This ensures long-term value retention for one of the most stable turntables ever.

The New Technics Turntable
The current Technics SL-1210 Mk7 further expands its market leadership in the DJ turntable realm and once again sets the bar. Especially Technics' drive technology is unmatched and will be particularly rewarding during long transitions. The tonearm and chassis complement each other perfectly and will also elevate the MK7 among Technics to a new cult object. The particularly cool black design fits perfectly in any underground club as well as in a New York or Berlin design loft.
Anyone finding the MK2 too "old-school" will rejoice in the SL-1210 Mk7 and can proudly claim ownership of a cult turntable for the next decades. The MK7 is certainly a turntable equally suitable for DJs as well as for music enthusiasts who want to play their vinyl with sophistication.
It remains to be hoped that Technics will again have a stronger presence in the realm of DJ equipment and perhaps soon introduce a Technics DJ mixer or maybe even a Technics DJ controller to the market.
