Scanner Lights
Scanner light effects are among the fastest moving-light effects there is. Instead of panning the entire head like a Moving Head, a scanner directs its beam via a small, motorised mirror—which is exactly what makes it so responsive. Clear beams, sharp patterns, lightning-fast movements. When combined with Nebel oder Hazer, the invisible beam becomes a sculpted fan of light that transforms a dance floor in seconds.

Scanner vs. Moving Head – what’s the difference?
That’s the question many people ask before putting together their first lighting setup. The difference lies in the mechanics: with a Moving Head, the entire luminaire head moves—whereas with a scanner, it’s only a small mirror that redirects the beam. This has direct consequences for practical use.
| Feature | Scanner | Moving Head |
| Movement speed | Very fast (lighter mirror) | Slower (the whole head moves) |
| Movement range | Limited (mirror surface) | Large (360° possible) |
| Light output | Slightly lower (beam redirection loss) | Higher (no redirection loss) |
| Noise level | Usually quieter | Often louder (more mechanics) |
| Ideal for | Fast beams, patterns, tight spaces | Large stages, greater action range |
For many DJ setups and club installations, scanners are the first choice—compact, fast, and packed with impact. If you combine both, you get the best of two worlds.
Where scanner lights work best
Clubs & dancefloors
Fast mirror movements, in rhythm with the music—that’s the natural element of a scanner. On the dance floor, the beams create dynamism and energy that bring a room up to operating temperature in no time. With two scanners, positioned well, you often only need that to cover a medium-sized dance floor.
Live stages & shows
Extremely crisp gobos on backdrops or the stage floor, precise beam accents on musicians or presenters—scanners add structure to the light show on stage. Their precision makes them especially valuable wherever you want patterns and logos projected cleanly.
Private events & celebrations
Weddings, birthdays, company parties—scanners make a strong impression even on a smaller scale. You can set them up and operate them without much prior knowledge, and they require little space. With a haze machine and a few targeted gobos, you can quickly create an atmosphere that feels professional.

Setup & how it works
A scanner consists of four essential components that have to work together for the effect to come out right:
| Component | Function | Practical benefit |
| Light source (LED) | Creates the beam | Energy-efficient, low-maintenance, instantly bright |
| Optics | Collimates and shapes the beam | Clear edges, defined projection |
| Gobo & colour wheel | Patterns, logos and colours | Fast switching, creative looks |
| Moving mirror (mirror) | Redirects the beam in direction and angle | Extremely fast movements, precise control |
Important when planning: The beam angle determines how much of the room the scanner covers. Tight optics produce strong, focused beams—ideal with haze. Wider angles cover larger areas, but they appear less pinpoint. The right choice always depends on the room and the look you want.

Control types
DMX
The professional solution. With a DMX controller, you control every parameter individually: mirror movement, colour, gobo, dimmer, strobe. Scenes can be programmed precisely and recalled at the touch of a button. If you perform regularly or run fixed installations, you won’t get around DMX. Fixtures with 16-bit resolution are particularly useful here, enabling especially smooth, even movements.
Master/Slave & auto
You can synchronise multiple scanners in a master/slave setup—completely without a desk. One unit defines the choreography, and the others follow. This is the fastest way to get a small multi-scanner setup running, and is enough for many DJ gigs.
Sound-to-Light
The built-in microphone reacts to the beat and drives the scanner directly. No programming, no controller—just plug it in and go. Spontaneous, straightforward, and with a haze machine in front, it already looks impressively effective.
What to look out for when buying
Brightness & optics
Power ratings alone tell you little. The key figures are lumens (total luminous flux) and lux (illuminance on a surface). A narrow beam with a high lux value looks more powerful on the dance floor than a device that spreads light broadly with more lumens. For bright environments or large rooms, you need more power—in small, dimmed venues, more compact units are usually enough.
Gobos & colours
Gobos are small metal discs or glass plates that are placed in front of the light source and project patterns, textures or logos onto walls and floors. Metal gobos are robust and cost-effective, while glass gobos allow for finer details and colour gradients. Rotating gobos create animated effects. Having a clearly separate gobo and colour wheel makes the setup more flexible—being able to control both independently is a clear plus.
Movement & DMX channels
The pan/tilt speed determines how dynamic a scanner feels. More DMX channels mean more control over fine details such as dimmer curves, gobo rotation or strobe timing. 8-bit resolution is enough for most gigs, but 16-bit is worth it when smooth transitions and calm scenes are just as important as fast chases.
Form factor, noise level & mounting
Scanners are naturally more compact and often quieter than Moving Heads—an actual advantage for mobile setups and tight stages. When buying, look out for the following:
- Housing size and weight for transport
- Fan noise level (relevant for small, quiet venues)
- Mounting options: floor stand, truss clamp, or both possible?
- Safety eyelets for safety cables when suspended
Alongside scanners, LED bars fit well for broad base lighting, or an strobe for pinpoint accent effects—both suit the setup nicely.
Room size & orientation guide
| Location | Recommended LED power | Number of scanners | Optics recommendation |
| Small bar / party basement | 30–60 W | 2 | Tight to medium |
| Medium dance floor / club | 60–120 W | 2–4 | Tight for beams, medium for coverage |
| Stage / live show | 100–200 W | 4+ | Tight for punch, gobos for projection |
Using scanners correctly
Position is everything. Scanners are best hung slightly elevated and at an angle over the dance floor—this way, the beams are optimally visible and hit the walls and floor effectively. Pointing straight down from above is rarely the best choice.
A few practical tips:
- Use haze: Without haze, the beam stays invisible. Even a thin haze veil makes the difference between “light somewhere” and “wow”.
- Vary the tempo: Fast chases for drops and highlights, slow movements for calmer passages—this makes a light show feel alive.
- Use gobos deliberately: Project patterns onto walls or the floor instead of sending everything into the air. This gives the room structure.
- Programme dimmer curves: Smooth fades in and out look more elegant than hard cuts—except with strobe, where it can go full power.
- Think in combinations: Scanners alone are strong. In combination with LED bars for wash lighting and a strobe for impact accents, you get a complete DJ lighting setup.
Maintenance & care
LED scanners are low-maintenance—but not maintenance-free. If you want to keep your equipment in good shape for a long time, follow a few simple routines:
- Clean the mirror, front glass and gobos regularly—dust noticeably reduces light output
- Check fans and cooling fins; investigate unusual noises immediately
- Check mountings (clamps, safety cables) before each use
- Transport only in suitable cases—this prevents expensive repairs
- Apply firmware updates when the manufacturer provides them
- Check cables for kinks and pressure points, especially at the connectors

The most important points at a glance
Scanner lights are the fastest moving-light effects in the DJ sector—compact, responsive and versatile to use. Their advantage lies in the lightning-fast mirror mechanism, which clearly beats Moving Heads when it comes to speed. In return, they cover less viewing angle—so for bigger shows, combining both is often a sensible approach.
If you’re specifically looking for the right scanner, you should keep an eye on light output, gobo selection, DMX channels and form factor—and above all make sure the unit is suited to the location and the level of requirements you have. The table above provides a good orientation.
At Recordcase.de, you’ll find scanner lights for all kinds of applications—from a compact entry-level unit to stage technology for professional shows. Matching DMX controllers, hazer and accessories are available directly as well.
