DJ Turntables - The Revival of Vinyl
DJing is a hobby for some, a profession for others. Regardless of how intensively you work on the turntables, it's important to use the right DJ turntable. Nowadays, there is a wide selection of different variants, which differ mainly in their structure. We'll show you what to look out for in general and how to recognize a high-quality product.
Drive Systems
There are various aspects to consider when purchasing a DJ turntable. One of these is the drive system: currently, two systems are widely used, these are direct drive and belt drive. With direct drive, a motor ensures the direct drive of the platter. This provides a quick response time to changes in tempo.
In contrast, there is the belt drive, which - as the name suggests - uses a belt to drive the platter. Although this construction reduces the annoying rumble generated by the separate operation of the motor and platter, the drive responds more slowly to sudden changes in speed.
The Cartridge Sets the Tone
The centerpiece of every DJ's turntable, however, is the stylus, located at the end of the cartridge and particularly sensitive. It only functions flawlessly when it is "sharp" enough. With wear and tear, a complete replacement is usually necessary after several years. It depends on the turntable whether the stylus can be replaced individually or if one needs to purchase and install an entirely new cartridge system.
An important point, therefore, is the selection of a turntable with a high-quality stylus. The cut plays a particularly significant role here: Generally, a distinction is made between the spherical and elliptical cut. The elliptical cut offers the advantage that the cartridge can process more data and thus cover a wider frequency range. The sound is generally richer, but at the same time, the record is slightly more stressed by the stylus.
For gentler treatment of records, on the other hand, a stylus with a spherical cut is recommended, especially for DJs who work regularly and use records frequently. Additionally, there are other cuts for the stylus - it is advisable to inquire more precisely at specialist retailers before making a choice.
Turntable Platter - and What to Consider When Buying a DJ Turntable Set
Another crucial component of a DJ turntable is the platter on which the vinyl record is placed. For proper operation, it is important that the record does not oscillate - hence it must be completely level on the platter. In general, the heavier the record, the better the synchronization systems work. Consequently, a high-quality turntable platter typically weighs more than eight kilograms.
Furthermore, there is the cartridge as one of the most important components of the turntable. It converts the fine grooves on the vinyl into digital acoustic signals - this is how the sound is ultimately generated. A well-made cartridge offers significantly better sound when playing the record - in this case, a comparison before purchase is definitely worthwhile.
Reviews from other buyers can also be a great help in finding the right device. Ultimately, with modern DJ turntables, it is also important to consider whether it is a USB turntable. A USB turntable offers the possibility to easily connect various end devices, such as the PC, by using a suitable cable. Other digital connections can also be helpful, although each DJ has their own preferences in this regard.
