With the Audient ASP880 you get a flexible and powerful control center for your microphone and line signals. In a compact 1RU housing, the device combines eight fully equipped Class-A microphone preamps with thoughtful features and a high-quality A/D converter – developed with the goal to make studio quality tangible. The core circuit comes directly from the large Audient consoles, refined over years by developer legend David Dearden. Each channel offers you 60 dB of low-noise gain, selectable input impedances (220, 1200, or 2800 Ohms) and a sweepable high-pass filter, which can be adjusted continuously from 25 to 250 Hz. This lets you adapt the input signal precisely to your microphones and recording situation. For especially hot levels – such as kick or snare mics – -10 dB pads are available on the first two channels. A switchable phase inversion ensures that your multi-mic setups sound coherent and powerful. On the front you will also find two discrete JFET DI inputs, ideal for bass or guitar. The high input impedance of 1 MOhm preserves the natural tonal character of your instruments and adds a pleasant analog coloration if needed. Especially practical: thanks to the insert points between preamp and converter, external hardware can be integrated seamlessly. Alternatively, you can also use the device as a standalone A/D converter via the A-D switch. Inside works a Burr Brown ADC with up to 115 dB dynamic range, which provides digital outputs via ADAT, AES, or S/PDIF. Whether you use the Audient model as an extension for your interface or as a standalone front end – the quality of the conversion and the thoughtful operation speak for themselves. Studio-level sound quality starts at the input signal – this is exactly where the ASP800 comes in. This 8-channel microphone preamp with integrated A/D converter is a well-thought-out extension for any audio interface that has an ADAT input. With its eight discrete Class-A preamps, developed based on the renowned Audient console technology, it ensures a clean and detailed sound – whether for voice recordings, acoustic instruments, or line signals. The first two channels offer special flexibility. Dedicated JFET instrument inputs allow you to connect guitars and basses directly, with an input impedance of 1 MΩ ensuring an authentic playing feel. Additionally, these channels feature two retro circuits with HMX and IRON that enable targeted harmonic saturation. HMX creates a warm, organic tonal coloration through discrete MOSFET technology, while IRON adds punch and airiness in the highs through a specially developed transformer – inspired by the sound of British analog gear from the 1970s. Another key feature is the integrated Burr-Brown converters, offering a dynamic range of 116 dB. Conversion is done via ADAT up to 96 kHz, with the ASP800 operating optionally as a master or slave clock source. This allows seamless integration into existing setups. Useful details include switchable pads, polarity reverse on channels 1 and 2, and individual phantom power per channel – for maximum control during recording. The analog outputs are implemented as a balanced DB25 connector and allow parallel routing to external processors or analog mixers. Speaker accessories
Speaker stands and wall mounts
A speaker that stands on the floor sounds worse than one positioned at ear level — this isn’t an opinion, it’s physics. Stands and wall mounts ensure that sound projects straight into the audience, instead of running into tables and legs.
When buying, it’s worth paying attention to the following points:
- Load capacity: Always choose with sufficient safety margin. If the speaker weighs 12 kg, the stand should be designed for at least 20 kg.
- Height adjustment: Stepless systems or those with a quick-tension mechanism save time during setup.
- Cable management: Integrated cable channels keep the stage tidy and prevent trip hazards.
- Feet: Rubberised or non-slip feet are no luxury on smooth floors — they’re a requirement.
For fixed installations in bars or clubs, wall mounts are often the better choice — space-saving, unobtrusive, and securely fixed at the correct angle. Swivelling models also make it possible to adjust the orientation later, without tools.

Carrying bags and protective covers
Every time you transport your equipment without protection, you’re drawing lots. Padded carrying bags and protective covers aren’t a luxury item — they pay for themselves at the latest when a repair damage is prevented for the first time.
For mobile DJs, a good rule of thumb applies: a bag for short distances and smaller events, flightcase for everything that goes on tour regularly. What matters for bags:
- Multi-layer padding, especially at edges and corners
- Weather-resistant outer material for outdoor use
- Reinforced zips and sturdy carrying straps
- Internal dimensions precisely matched to the equipment — too much play means too much movement
Rack and case accessories
Flightcases and PA racks
A good flightcase is an investment that lasts for years — and that you only truly appreciate when your equipment arrives safely at the venue, while a colleague’s doesn’t. Professional cases are made from birch plywood with aluminium corners, foam inlays, and high-quality hardware such as butterfly latches and sturdy castors.
For use on tours or in rental, a few things are particularly important:
| Feature | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Standard dimensions in height units (HE) | Devices can be combined and swapped universally |
| Foam inlays | Secure the equipment and dampen vibrations |
| Castors with braking function | Controlled transport even on slopes |
| Stackability | Saves space in the van and when storing |
| Butterfly latches | Securely locks in place, even under vibration |
Cable management
Cable clutter costs time. Time you don’t have during setup and teardown. A well thought-out cable management system pays off every time you need to be ready to play within ten minutes.
What has proven itself includes: cable bags with labelable compartments, colour-coded Velcro cable ties for quick identification of the lines, and separate storage for power and audio cables — because cross-talk is met with clean sound. Anyone who consistently relies on wheel systems or cable looms will have setup clearly under better control and find faulty cables more easily.
Accessories for signal processing
DI boxes — the underestimated tool
DI boxes are small, affordable, and still often forgotten — until it starts to buzz. This annoying 50 Hz hum from the speakers is caused by so-called ground loop hum: multiple earthed devices are connected via audio cables, different earth potentials meet, and this potential equalisation soon makes itself noticeable as a buzzing sound.
A DI box solves this by isolating the signal galvanically and simultaneously converting it from unbalanced to balanced. Balanced connections reliably suppress interference noise picked up along long cable runs.
Passive or active? The difference in practice:
- Passive DI boxes work via a transformer, don’t need power, and are robust. Ideal for instruments with a strong output signal.
- Active DI boxes require a power supply (battery or phantom power) and in return deliver a cleaner sound for low-balanced sources such as laptops or CD players.
For DJs who play with a laptop or controller, a high-quality active DI box between the mixer and the system isn’t a gimmick — it’s the difference between a trouble-free performance and nervous cable troubleshooting right before the first track.

Equalisers and frequency crossovers
Every room sounds different. Low ceilings, concrete walls, packed dancefloors — all of this changes the frequency response noticeably. With an equaliser, you can counteract in a targeted way: problematic room modes can be reduced, missing brilliance can be boosted, and too much midrange pressure can be taken out.
For mobile DJing, graphic equalisers with 31 bands are a proven choice — quick to set up, and easy to read visually. If you want to work more precisely or run a fixed setup, you’ll want parametric equalisers with an adjustable mid frequency and Q factor.
Frequency crossovers have a different job: they split the audio signal into frequency ranges and send bass, mids, and treble separately to the appropriate speakers. This relieves the individual drivers, reduces distortion, and improves the overall sound — especially with passive systems that use separate subwoofers.
Limiters and compressors
Speakers don’t like level peaks. A short, hard overshoot is enough to damage the tweeters — it happens faster than you’d think, especially during live transitions or with unfamiliar material. A limiter sets a hard limit here and prevents damage without affecting the sound, as long as the level stays within the normal range.
Compressors work more gently: they smooth out dynamic differences in the mix, make the bass more defined, and keep the overall sound under control. In practice, both are often combined — either as a separate rack device or as an integrated function in modern DSP controllers and active subwoofers.
Buying advice at a glance
Before you buy, a few basic questions are worth considering:
- How often do you transport the equipment? Anyone who travels every week needs more robust solutions than someone who only does a gig once a month.
- Is your setup fixed or mobile? Wall mounts and hard-wired racks for fixed installations, easy-access accessories, and bags for mobile DJs.
- Does it fit with your existing equipment? Pay attention to standard dimensions (19" rack, HE), compatible connections, and matched load capacities.
- What warranty and service are offered? Manufacturers with good support are especially valuable for hardware that’s used regularly.
As a rule, cutting costs on accessories at the wrong end quickly backfires. A stand that wobbles at the third gig, or a case whose latches no longer close after a season, ends up costing more than the cheapest offer you saved on.
Frequently asked questions
Case or bag — what do I really need?
For occasional transport and smaller setups, a well-padded bag is enough. If you’re on tour regularly, have sensitive equipment, or work in a rental business, you should invest in a flightcase. The protection simply isn’t comparable.
Which speaker stand for heavy speakers?
Always calculate with a safety margin. Models with a quick-tension mechanism, integrated cable management, and non-slip feet are not only more practical — they’re also safer. For outdoor events, you may also want earth spikes or counterweights in case of wind.
Do I really need a DI box as a DJ?
If you hand your signal directly to a club system or a mixing desk, it’s almost always yes. Especially with laptops and controllers that have unbalanced outputs, a DI box is the most reliable solution against ground loop hum and interference noise. Once you have one, you’ll never want to miss it again.
How do I find compatible accessories?
Base your choice on standard dimensions and manufacturer specifications. Standardised formats such as a 19" rack or HE units make expanding the system much easier. When in doubt, a quick look in the manual or an enquiry with the manufacturer helps — before you order the wrong part.
