What are Slipmats?
Slipmats have several functions. A slipmat looks like a record and is the same size as one. It is usually made of felt, sometimes also of neoprene, and performs the following functions:
- Reduction of friction of the record
- Protection of the record
- Allows DJ-techniques that would not be possible without Slipmat, e. g. scratching, backspin etc....
- Improved optics
- Reduction of static charge
- Protection of the turntable drive
Especially the DJ-techniques used in the Hip Hop/Rap area would destroy records in the long run without a proper slipmat. In a scratch movement, a slipmat stops the record while the turntable's motor moves even further. The plate slides over the turntable, so to speak.
Here you can find a short demonstration video showing the white function:
Style for turntables
Besides the functionality, a turntable should also make felt mats visually attractive. So they are available in all imaginable designs and colours and for every type there should be something to find. Since the Slipmat can also be seen during the performance, it can of course also serve as a figurehead for the DJ or as an advertisement for a certain brand.
Technics 1210 Slipmats are very popular, simply because the turntable itself is a legend. And so that everyone can see that you are working with one, you can underline this with a suitable edition.
Commercial slipmats are made of felt. The material is "record sparing" and the skid resistance is very good. However, not everyone wants to have these characteristics, but has different preferences. In addition, the static charge is of course greatest in felt.
So there are also cork slipmats. Besides their improved antistatic properties, they can also enhance the sound, as they are highly rezonant-reducing. The Hifi High-End Vinyl lover will also be happy with Neoprene Slipmats. These offer equivalent characteristics, but are cheaper to produce, which has an effect on the price.
The basic charge can be drastically reduced by a record washer, regardless of the material of the slipmat. Of course you will find suitable equipment and materials in our shop.
