What are Slipmats?

Slipmats, or as they are called in German "Plattenspielerauflage," have several functions. A Slipmat resembles a vinyl record and has the same size as one. Usually made of felt, sometimes also made of neoprene, it serves the following functions:
- Reduction of vinyl record friction
- Protection of the vinyl record
- Enables DJ techniques that would not be possible without a Slipmat, such as scratching, backspin, etc...
- Improvement of aesthetics
- Reduction of static charge
- Protection of the turntable motor
Especially the DJ techniques used in the Hip Hop/Rap sector would damage records over time without a proper Slipmat. During a scratch movement, a Slipmat stops the record while the motor of the turntable continues to move. The record essentially slides over the platter.
