Understanding the technology: what really matters
Numbers and specs on the datasheet don’t always tell you what a microphone sounds like. Still, there are a few technical points you should know – they help you make the right choice.
Diaphragm size
The diaphragm is the heart of every microphone. It converts sound waves into electrical signals. In simple terms: larger diaphragm = warmer and fuller sound. Smaller diaphragm = more precise and more neutral sound. Of course, that’s a simplification, but as a rule of thumb it works well.
Polar pattern
The polar pattern determines which direction a microphone picks up sound from – and what it rejects. This is crucial in practice:

XLR vs. USB – the honest assessment
XLR is the professional standard. The signal is transmitted symmetrically via a cable to the audio interface, which then digitises the sound and sends it to the computer. That makes the system flexible, expandable and sonically superior – but you need at least a good interface for it.
USB is easier. The microphone handles the conversion itself; you plug it straight into the computer. Less effort, but also less flexibility: using two USB microphones at the same time, for example, is a hassle. For getting started and simple setups, however, USB is absolutely legitimate.
Phantom power – what’s behind it
Condenser microphones need power to work – they don’t supply it themselves. That’s where phantom power comes in: 48 volts direct current, which flows through the XLR cable from the audio interface or mixing desk directly to the microphone. The name comes from the fact that this voltage is invisible to dynamic microphones – they “don’t see” it and aren’t affected by it.
What you need to know:
- All condenser microphones require phantom power
- Dynamic microphones don’t need it – and they won’t be damaged if it’s applied (with proper wiring)
- Be careful with ribbon microphones: it’s best to check whether phantom power is compatible
- Always connect the cable first, then switch on phantom power – not the other way around
- USB microphones don’t require external phantom power

Accessories: what you really need
One good microphone alone isn’t enough. Four things make the decisive difference in practice:
- Pop shield: Prevents plosive sounds like “P” and “B” from landing as a pop in the recording. A must – especially for singing and speech.
- Shock mount: Decouples the microphone from the stand and prevents footfall noise or desk vibrations from getting into the recording.
- Stand or microphone arm: Keeps your hands free and positions the microphone securely. A desktop arm is more comfortable for podcasting and streaming than a floor stand.
- Reflection filter: A portable acoustic screen behind the microphone reduces room ambience noticeably – ideal for untreated rooms in home recording.
Many microphones are already available as a set with accessories. This not only saves money, but also the hassle of searching for compatible parts.

How to find your microphone
Before you buy, three questions are worth considering:
1. What do you need it for? Vocals, podcasting, instruments, streaming – the clearer your use case, the more targeted your choice. A broadcast microphone for vocal recordings often sounds unsatisfying, and vice versa.
2. What does your room sound like? This is underestimated. An expensive condenser microphone in a lively, untreated room sounds worse than a cheaper dynamic microphone in the same room. If you don’t have a way to treat your acoustics, it’s better to go for a dynamic model – it’s more forgiving.
3. What else comes into play? XLR microphones need an audio interface. Condenser microphones need phantom power. Beginners often underestimate what a complete setup costs. With a USB microphone, you’re ready to go straight away without extra costs.
