Since 2004, Novation has been part of the Focusrite Group and continues to develop its products in England – with a clear focus on creative tools for the modern musician.
Origin & history
Founded in 1992 by Ian Jannaway and Mark Thompson in the British town of High Wycombe, Novation began with a simple idea: musicians should be able to truly play their sound tools – not just operate them. The first product was the MM10, a compact keyboard interface for the Yamaha QY10. Simple, yet ahead of its time.
The real breakthrough came in 1993 with the Bass Station – a portable analogue synthesizer that packed the energy of the TB-303 into a new enclosure. Artists such as Orbital, Massive Attack, Laurent Garnier and Nine Inch Nails took it up. The brand was established. Next came the Drum Station, recreating TR-808 and TR-909 sounds via analogue sound modelling, and finally the Supernova – a polyphonic synthesizer that catapulted Novation into the top league of synth manufacturers.
In 2009, the Launchpad arrived – developed in close collaboration with Ableton. An 8×8 grid of glowing pads that fundamentally changed the way you make music with software. Today, Launchpad can be found in countless live sets worldwide, and it has long since become a classic.

What drives Novation
Novation doesn’t pursue complexity for complexity’s sake. The philosophy is simple: tools that inspire instead of blocking you. No miserable menu-diving, no overloaded control panels. Instead, direct, haptic control that supports the creative flow.
This is especially evident in the close collaboration with Ableton. Novation devices aren’t generic MIDI controllers with an Ableton logo stuck on them – they are designed from the ground up for the workflow in Live. Clip control, scene launching, mixer access: everything without a mouse, and without detours.
At the same time, Novation actively pushes development forward. New generations arrive with genuine improvements rather than cosmetic updates. And if you use your hardware for longer, you benefit from regular firmware updates via the Novation Components app.
The product range
Launchpad series – the Ableton controller par excellence
The Launchpad is probably Novation’s best-known product. An 8×8 grid of RGB pads – compact, robust, and tailored directly to Ableton Live. Launch clips, switch scenes, control effects: everything happens in real time, without ever having to touch the mouse.
The series is available in several sizes and feature levels:
- Launchpad Mini – the most compact model, ideal for on the go or as an add-on to an existing setup. Bus-powered via USB, light, and straightforward.
- Launchpad X – slightly larger, with velocity- and pressure-sensitive pads. For anyone who wants more expression when playing.
- Launchpad Pro – the flagship of the series. With its own step sequencer, MIDI In/Out, and the most extensive performance modes. For serious live use.
All models provide visual feedback via coloured pads – you can immediately see which clip is running, what’s muted, and where you are in the set.

Launchkey series – the MIDI keyboard for producers
The Launchkey line is Novation’s answer to the question: what does the perfect keyboard for DAW work look like? The answer has now arrived in its fourth generation – and the MK4 series is a real leap forward.
What sets the current generation apart:
- FSR pads with polyphonic aftertouch – a patented technology that delivers more precise pressure control than classic drum pads
- Generative arpeggiator with step editor, mutate and deviate function – far more than a standard arp
- Three chord modes (Fixed Chord, User Chord, Chord Map) plus automatic chord detection on the OLED display
- Scale mode with 30 scales that automatically sync with Ableton Live
- Deep DAW support for Ableton Live, Logic Pro, Cubase, FL Studio, Reason, Bitwig and more – without setup hassle
The Launchkey series is available in six sizes: Mini 25, Mini 37, 25, 37, 49 and 61-key versions. The larger models (49/61) feature semi-weighted piano keys, nine faders, and a split/layer function for two independent MIDI zones.

Synthesizers & grooveboxes
Alongside the controllers, Novation also has a strong side as a synth manufacturer. The instruments range from an entry-friendly analogue classic to a professional performance synthesizer.
Bass Station II – the direct successor to the original from 1993. Monophonic analogue synthesizer with two oscillators, a sub oscillator, and an integrated step sequencer. For punchy basslines and cutting leads – a proven classic that’s still being produced today.
Circuit series – compact grooveboxes for use without a computer. Sequencer, synthesizer and drum machine in a handy unit. Ideal for jam sessions on the go or as a creative sketchpad next to your main setup. Especially Circuit Tracks offers true portability with an internal battery.
Peak & Summit – the flagship models. Hybrid synthesizers that combine digital wavetable oscillators with analogue filters. The Peak offers eight voices and an extensive modulation matrix; the Summit doubles this to 16 voices, adds FM synthesis, and is multitimbral. Both are instruments for serious sound designers and live performers – developed substantially by synth legend Chris Huggett.

Who is Novation for?
Novation covers a broad range – from your first steps in electronic music to a professional live setup. Here’s a rough guide:
| Profile | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Beginner, first steps with Ableton | Launchpad Mini or Launchkey 25/Mini |
| Bedroom producer, daily DAW work | Launchkey 37 or 49 MK4 |
| Live performer, clip-based sets | Launchpad X or Launchpad Pro |
| Producer with a taste for hardware sounds | Bass Station II or Circuit Tracks |
| Professional sound design & performance | Peak or Summit |
An important note for beginners: every current Novation product comes with a licence for Ableton Live Lite – a full-fledged way to get started with production, without needing to buy extra software. The Launchkey MK4 series also includes plugins from Klevgrand, GForce and Orchestral Tools, as well as learning sessions via Melodics.
Software & integration
Ableton Live
The closest integration is still with Ableton Live. Clip launching, scene control, mixer control, effects, step sequencer – all happens directly on the device, without a mouse. This applies to the entire Launchpad and Launchkey family. The MK4 Launchkeys can even control Ableton’s built-in step sequencer directly via the pads.
Other DAWs
With the MK4 generation, Novation has significantly expanded support for other DAWs. Alongside Ableton, there are dedicated scripts and mappings for Logic Pro, FL Studio, Cubase, Reason, Bitwig and Ardour. With the HUI standard, the keyboards also work with Reaper, Pro Tools and Studio One. Older models can be freely configured via the MIDI standard.
Novation Components
Novation Components is the free web app for everything around firmware and customisation. Firmware updates, custom MIDI mappings, loading and saving templates – all directly in the browser, without installation. If you use your hardware for years, you’ll get regularly delivered new features here.

Buying advice: finding the right Novation device
A few questions that make the decision easier:
Do you need keys? If so, the Launchkey series is the right choice. If not – or if you primarily want to control clips and scenes – a Launchpad is completely sufficient.
How big does it need to be? For on the go or smaller setups, mini versions are ideal. If you want more control elements and better play feel, go for the 49- or 61-key models – the larger Launchkeys have semi-weighted keys, faders, and a split/layer function.
Do you want hardware sounds? Then it’s worth taking a look at the synthesizer page. The Bass Station II is a proven entry into analogue hardware. The Circuit grooveboxes are excellent as a mobile sketchpad. For professional sound design, Peak and Summit are the first choice.
Which DAW do you use? For Ableton users, Novation is the first choice – hardly any other manufacturer offers such deep integration. With the MK4 generation, however, Novation has also significantly improved support for Logic, FL Studio, Cubase and others.
Browse our Novation range and find the device that fits your workflow – whether you’re just getting started or want to expand your setup.

The Novation MiniNova is a powerful and professional performance synthesizer from Novation, whose 300 factory sounds can be edited and changed with five performance knobs or the eight Animate buttons. Per voice, five effects are available for further sound manipulation. Since the MiniNova synthesizer can be connected to a laptop, desktop computer, keyboard or sound module via USB connection and MIDI in and out and has excellent sound characteristics, it offers ideal conditions for the use in electronic music, rock-pop and mainstream. In addition to the strong vocoder, the unit also has strong vocal tune effects, which can either add the finishing touches to vocal signals or create completely new effects. This creates classic vocoder vocal sounds as known from hip hop and urban productions. Guitars and other signals can also be processed with the vocoder and the effects section with reverb, distortion, chorus/phase, gator, compressor and EQ. The synthesizer not only provides 300 factory sounds, but also space for 128 of your own sounds. Its practical search function contains search criteria such as genre (techno, hip hop etc.) or sound type (bass, lead etc.) and makes navigation much easier. The fifth controller is a large filter cutoff knob for delicate interventions or radical cuts, while the other four performance controllers allow you to edit strong sounds in real time. With clearly structured controls and a variety of sound options, the Novation Bass Station II is aimed at musicians looking for a versatile analog mono synthesizer with thoughtful performance features. Two oscillators, a sub-oscillator, noise generator, and ring modulation give you a wide range of sounds – from earthy basses to expressive leads. Two independently controllable filter types, including a 24 dB/octave acid filter, provide the typical analog character with a powerful fundamental tone. The interface is designed so you can deeply shape your sound with just a few steps. Filter modulation, distortion, and a paraphonic mode that lets you play both oscillators independently open up new sonic possibilities. Two ADSR envelopes and two LFOs provide flexible modulation sources that make your sound lively and dynamic. The internal mixer lets you control the levels of each sound source, including an external signal path. For rhythmic ideas, a step sequencer with arpeggiator is available. The Novation Launchkey 49 MK4 is a MIDI controller that redefines modern music making. It appeals to both experienced producers and beginners looking for a tool that combines inspiration and efficiency. The 49 velocity-sensitive keys allow for expressive playing, capturing every nuance of your performance. At the same time, the comprehensive DAW integration provides smooth operation with popular programs such as Ableton Live, Logic Pro, and FL Studio. The optimized transport controls make it easy to control projects without constantly switching between the controller and software. The OLED display always provides key information in a clear and real-time format. A highlight is the new chord modes and the innovative chord map of the device. With the Fixed Chord mode, you can store predefined chords on a key and quickly and precisely incorporate them into your composition. The User Chord mode allows you to define up to 16 individual chords and access them via the RGB-lit pads. However, the Chord Map takes the playing experience to a new level: it divides the pads into two areas – one for stored chords and one for performance tools such as inversions, bidirectional arpeggios, and chord splits. This gives you a completely new way to discover and play harmonies and melodies. The Chord Map combines creative freedom with technical precision and makes the Launchkey 49 MK4 a true musical tool. Another highlight is the 16 RGB-lit pads with polyphonic aftertouch, opening up entirely new possibilities for sound design. Whether it's dynamic beats, precise triggering of samples, or exploring new sonic worlds – everything is possible here. This is supported by the generative arpeggiator, which combines complex patterns with ease of use. Novation Launchkey 37 MK4 is a compact DAW controller with three octaves, making it noticeably easier for you to write, play and control music. The 37 full-size synth-action keys, 16 velocity-sensitive pads and eight endless encoders work together smoothly, so you can turn ideas into action straight away. Creative tools like Scale Mode, Chord Map, Fixed Chord and a generative arpeggiator are included too. This way you work more musically, stay securely within your key, and control your software without constantly switching between keyboard, mouse and controller. Direct access to your session This model is built for a workflow where you don’t just operate your DAW, but actively play it. The DAW integration supports important programmes such as Ableton Live, Logic, Cubase, FL Studio, Reason, Bitwig and Ardour. Plugin, mixer, send and transport functions are quickly within reach, so you can keep tracks, effects and workflows under control directly on the device. What’s particularly useful is the clear navigation within the ongoing project. Transport buttons, track navigation, Capture MIDI as well as functions for quantisation, undo and redo help you capture spontaneous ideas and carry on without detours. The monochrome OLED display supports you with clear feedback on the modes and parameters currently in use. More music, fewer detours The built-in creative functions are more than just extra options. With Scale Mode you play confidently within selected scales, while Chord Map, Fixed Chord and User Chord make creating harmonies much easier. This is especially helpful when you want to develop ideas quickly or work harmoniously and cleanly without constantly having to think theoretically. The generative arpeggiator with step editor also brings movement to melodies, chords and rhythmic patterns. From simple inputs, you create lively patterns that you can continue processing directly. Especially when composing electronic music or sketching new parts, this makes the difference between a good idea and an arrangement you can use immediately. Pads with real expressiveness The 16 RGB backlit pads are clearly aligned to a performance-oriented playing feel. Thanks to polyphonic aftertouch, they don’t just respond precisely to velocity, but also to additional pressure per note played. This is ideal for drums, clip starts and expressive chord pads, because your playing stays more detailed and controlled.Even for finger drumming, the responsive feel pays off. The pads can be used not only for beats, but also for chords or individual notes. This makes the controller more versatile, especially when you switch between producing, performing and sound design and don’t want to use a different input device for every task. Keys and controls with a clear purpose The 37 synth-style keys combine a software-based approach with a playing feel that’s closer to an instrument than pure technical control. With velocity sensitivity, basslines, melodies, chords and also percussive elements gain more expression. The pitch-bend and modulation wheel add direct interventions into sound and movement to your playing. The eight endless encoders move smoothly and can be used flexibly. They’re suitable for plugin parameters, mixing, sends or individual assignments. With the custom modes, you adapt the controller to your setup instead of adjusting your workflow to the controller. Who is the Launchkey 37 MK4 for? Novation Launchkey 37 MK4 is a good match if you’re looking for a controller that brings composition, performance and software control together in a sensible way. Especially well-suited for producers, songwriters and live-oriented musicians who work with multiple tracks, virtual instruments and a modern DAW. With three octaves, the device remains compact enough for the desk, while still offering significantly more playing range than smaller 25-key models.
