Allen & Heath Xone S2

In permanently installed booths, source selection, monitoring and level limiting must work reliably even when DJs change. The Allen & Heath Xone S2 is an analogue 19-inch installation mixer in a 4U format for clubs, bars and mobile DJ setups. Four stereo dual-input channels and two additional mono mic or stereo line channels form the basis; the model is available with linear or rotary faders.

The four main channels each accept phono or line signals and have a 3-band total-kill EQ with +6 dB and Off settings. Using the analogue Xone filter section, you can select the main channels individually or route external devices or the mixer insert through the filter. High-pass, band-pass and low-pass filters can be combined; frequency and resonance are adjustable.

Two front-panel XLR inputs are provided for microphones. The channels can alternatively be used as stereo line inputs, and each has a 2-band EQ. An adjustable auto-ducking function lowers the music level when a microphone signal is present; the response and release times are selectable. Fader start on each main channel supports the start of compatible players, while the assignable crossfader offers a scratch or mix curve.

A further stereo line input on the front lets you connect, for example, a guest DJ's source without having to access the rear of the mixer. Its level and cue can be controlled separately. The USB audio interface transfers two uncompressed stereo channels between the mixer and a computer. This lets you play and record digital audio signals or use compatible software as an effects unit via the insert. The USB recording path is configurable: by default, it routes the signal from the rear RCA phono sockets to the computer; an internal switch can instead select the internal left-right mix bus.

For connection to a sound system, there are balanced XLR master outputs as well as separate monitor, record, zone and mono/sub outputs. The master limiter can be preset to a maximum output level, independently of the input level setting. The zone output can be tapped before the master level and controlled using an external 0–10 V control; the mono output can be used as a sub-bass output. The alarm contact interrupts the four music channels, while the microphone channels remain open for announcements.

Three headphone connections – two on the front and one on the rear – and Split Cue make monitoring and permanent installations easier. The mixer also offers a master insert, an external filter connection and a separate FX insert. The rack-mount design and separate zone and monitor paths suit club and bar systems where multiple signal sources, announcements and different listening areas need to be managed.
