Product description Warm Audio WA-251

For vocal and instrumental recordings, the polar pattern can be crucial when you want to control the room sound or sound bleed. The Warm Audio WA-251 is a tube large-diaphragm condenser microphone with three switchable polar patterns and a transformer-balanced output. It is based on the classic 251 microphone design and is suitable for studio, live and broadcast applications.

At the external power supply, you can choose between cardioid, omnidirectional and figure-eight. Cardioid picks up sound primarily from the front, omnidirectional captures sound all around, and figure-eight picks up sound from the front and rear. This lets you adapt the recording pattern to the voice, instrument and desired room ambience. The switch is on the power supply, so you can change the polar pattern there.

The signal path combines a custom-made WA-12-B-60V capsule in the CK12 style, a Slovak JJ-12AY7 vacuum tube and a CineMag-USA output transformer. The capsule is edge-terminated, has a dual backplate and is made entirely of brass. Wima, French Solen and polystyrene capacitors are also part of the circuit.

The microphone is connected to the external, IEC-earthed power supply using the included 7-pin tube microphone cable. The power supply routes the audio signal to the microphone preamp via a three-pin XLR output; you will need a separate XLR microphone cable for this. The signal connection to the power supply is made via its 7-pin connector.

With its frequency range of 20 Hz to 20 kHz and a maximum sound pressure level of 132 dB, the WA-251 is suitable for vocals, guitars, basses, drums, piano, strings, as well as brass and woodwind instruments. It is suited to recording environments where you want to use a tube microphone with switchable polar patterns and a separate power supply.
