Akai MPC-2500 SE

Sample, chop and sequence directly on the device: the Akai MPC-2500 SE is a drum and phrase sampling workstation with 16 pads, a 64-track MIDI sequencer and an integrated CD burner. This limited special edition stands out with its white casing, blue display and 128 MB of sample memory.

For beats and sample-based arrangements, 16 velocity- and pressure-sensitive pads with four pad banks are at your disposal. Note Repeat, MPC Swing and Grid Editing support recording and precise editing of drum patterns. The sequencer holds up to 100,000 notes; mixer automation and the Next Sequence function complement the workflow when arranging and playing.

Samples can be recorded on the Main page while sequencing. Chop-Shop splits loops into individual samples and automatically assigns them to pads. With Patched Phrase, you can match phrase samples to the sequencer tempo without changing their pitch. Pitch Shift and Time Stretch are available for sample editing; a Continuous Sample Track can integrate longer audio recordings into a Sequence.

Two internal effects processors can operate simultaneously; another effect is assigned to the Main outputs. Options include Reverb, Delay, Bit Grunger, Chorus, Phaser, Flying Pan, 4-band EQ, Compressor and Phase Shifter. A four-pole filter is available for all sample voices.

For adjustments during playback, there are two Note Variation faders and two Q-Link knobs. You can assign them to parameters such as level, pan, filter cutoff and resonance, tuning, LFO speed or effect parameters. Knob movements can be recorded and played back in a Sequence; the Q-Link sequencer is used to edit these modulations. Audio Input Thru routes an input signal through the device and can also be controlled via Q-Link.

The built-in DM25 drive is used for burning and loading CDs. You can connect the MPC to a computer via USB to transfer files, create backups or import WAV files. Internal hard drives can be installed as optional additional storage; CompactFlash cards are also supported.

With ten analogue outputs, stereo digital I/O and MIDI connections, the device can be integrated into a studio or hardware setup. The swivelling, backlit display shows the user interface at a resolution of 240 × 64 pixels. The MPC-2500 SE is suited to productions that focus on sampling, pattern sequencing and hands-on control of hardware.
