Product description Synq SMX-2

A DJ mixer with numerous inputs makes it easier to switch between different sources without having to reconnect cables. The Synq SMX-2 offers 12 inputs across five fader channels as well as a DJ microphone channel. An input matrix assigns sources to the channels; it also features two master outputs, an SD card sampler and internal effects.

The five channels can be adjusted using gain and 3-band EQ. The EQ bands on the input channels range from -30 dB to +10 dB; a kill function attenuates the bands by 30 dB. LED level meters with peak memory show the channel and master levels. VCA-controlled, replaceable faders each have an adjustable curve. You can also assign channels A and B to the crossfader and adjust the transition from soft to sharp.

Two differently configured outputs are available for connecting to the PA system: Master 1 is balanced via XLR and offers level control, balance, mono/stereo switching and signal trim. Master 2 is unbalanced via RCA and has independent level control. A stereo send/return connects external effects units. The input matrix allows flexible source assignment and can also assign the sampler to one of the five channels.

The phrase-oriented sampler records in 16-bit, 44.1 kHz stereo. It stores samples on SD cards of up to 512 MB and requires cards with a write speed of more than 5 MB/s and FAT16 formatting; there is no internal storage. Each card supports up to 100 memory banks, each with five samples. Two samples can play simultaneously, and loops can be set using editable start and end points. Sampler inputs and outputs can be assigned to channels; however, the sampler cannot be used simultaneously with the multi-effects, although it can be used with the crossfader effects.

Two beat-synchronised mix effects are available for transitions between the assigned crossfader sides. There are also eight digital effects: echo, autopan, flanger, manual and automatic filter, reverb, trans and pitch shifter. Beat-related effects can be controlled in time with the beat using presets; parameters can be adjusted and presets saved for selected effects. An effect cue function lets you preview the effects. The backlit LCD displays information about the effects, sampler and beat counters.

Automatic beat counters determine the tempo of the input channels. Cue buttons let you preview sources through the headphone output and mix cue with the programme signal; the tempo display relates to the selected channel. The DJ microphone input supports talkover: when you speak, the other input channels are attenuated. The music attenuation and return time are adjustable. Fader start for compatible CD players controls their start, stop and re-cue functions via the corresponding connections.

The SMX-2 is suited to DJ setups where multiple line, phono and microphone sources need to be connected and quickly reassigned. Two separate master outputs, the external effects loop and SD sampler recording add practical routing and performance functions to the mixer.
