Products by: Native Instruments

Native Instruments connects music software with hardware that does not feel like a mere accessory. The Berlin-based manufacturer has built its product worlds on one clear idea: sounds, samples, beats, and DJ sets should be created and remain controllable directly on the instrument, controller, or pad interface. The workflow takes precedence over a mere list of functions.

This still shapes the brand to this day. Anyone working with Native Instruments usually opts for a single device and, at the same time, for a specific way of working: sounds are organized in a library, software provides the musical core, and hardware brings controls to exactly where they are needed while playing or producing.

From software pioneer to connected music system

Native Instruments was founded in Berlin in 1996. At a time when powerful computers were increasingly becoming a fixed part of the studio, the company developed instruments and effects for real-time sound processing. Programs like REAKTOR, KONTAKT, and GUITAR RIG represent different sides of this development: modular sound design, sampling, and guitar or effect processing.

The decisive feature lies in the connection of the layers. Software and user interface interlock. This distinguishes Native Instruments from pure plug-in providers as well as from hardware manufacturers who only supplement their devices with included software. The brand has developed three logical areas of work from this: KOMPLETE for music production, MASCHINE for beat production and performance, and TRAKTOR for digital DJing.

Native Instruments - From software pioneer to connected music system

KOMPLETE: Instruments, effects, and a shared sound pool

KOMPLETE is not a single instrument, but a platform of software instruments, effects, sample libraries, and complementary controller concepts. At its core, two questions often arise: which sound colors do you really need, and how deep should the editing go? For songwriting and production, a few well-fitting instruments are often sufficient. Those pursuing film scoring, electronic genres, or detailed sound design tasks benefit more from a broader library and a well-thought-out search structure.

KONTAKT plays a special role here. The sampler loads suitable libraries and makes them playable via presets, articulations, and parameters. This is practical if a keyboard is expected to provide strings, percussion, acoustic instruments, or specially produced textures alongside piano or synthesizer sounds. Library compatibility is more important before purchase than the sheer number of sounds. Not every Kontakt library requires the same full version, and not every instrument suits your own musical style.

For keyboard controllers with a KOMPLETE KONTROL focus, NKS integration is added. NKS bundles sound information and controller assignments so that compatible instruments can be browsed via hardware and parameters can be operated without complex MIDI mapping. This saves time during recurring productions. However, it does not replace the need to check whether your preferred plug-ins and your DAW actually fit into this workflow.

When planning a studio, it is worth looking at KOMPLETE not as a massive pool of content, but as a building block of your own studio setup. A good audio interface, a sensibly chosen MIDI controller, and a stable computer environment are just as decisive in whether the software can be used fluidly in everyday life.

Native Instruments - KOMPLETE: Instruments, effects, and a shared sound pool

MASCHINE: Building beats with hands instead of a mouse

MASCHINE combines a pad controller and production software. Samples can be recorded, cut, and distributed across pads; patterns are created by playing them in or via step sequencing and are subsequently assembled into scenes and arrangements. The process is closer to a groovebox than to a classic linear DAW view. Especially for drum patterns, basslines, and short musical ideas, this is a different approach than drawing notes or clips with a mouse.

Playing via pads changes the workflow noticeably. Dynamics, timing, and variations arise directly while playing. If you primarily produce beat-based electronic music, hip-hop, or live-oriented loops, MASCHINE often fits well at the creative beginning of a production. For complex audio recordings, extensive mixing, and final arrangement work, however, a DAW usually remains the better main workstation. Both can be combined meaningfully, but you should decide on the workflow beforehand.

The size of the unit is not a minor detail when it comes to pad controllers. Small devices are good for limited space and mobile sessions, while larger surfaces offer more direct access to volume, parameters, and editing. Taking a look at the available MASCHINE controllers helps to align the operating concept with your own space requirements and the desired depth of hardware access.

Native Instruments - MASCHINE: Building beats with hands instead of a mouse

TRAKTOR: Digital DJing with an open controller concept

TRAKTOR represents the DJ side of Native Instruments. The software manages the music library, beatgrids, loops, cues, and effects and can be operated via specially matched hardware or via MIDI. This separation is a key point: the software forms the DJ system, the controller determines how directly you reach decks, mixer functions, and performance tools.

For DJs, the number of controls is therefore less decisive than the intended use. Anyone who is compact on the move pays attention to transport dimensions, connections, and quick access to the most important mixing functions. Anyone integrating four decks, remix elements, or external players into the setup needs more control and a clear plan for audio routing and space on the desk. Compatibility and workflow should take priority over controller size.

TRAKTOR can also work with timecode setups and additional controllers. This is interesting if you want to integrate vinyl or CD players into a digital system or outsource certain functions to a separate surface. Such combinations are flexible but require careful checking of the software version, operating system, and hardware support. A compact TRAKTOR controller is intended for different requirements than an extensive setup with an external mixer and timecode.

What you should look out for in the Native Instruments ecosystem

Native Instruments works with software, user accounts, and product registration. This is part of the usage and should be planned for before purchase, especially if you are setting up a new computer or rebuilding an existing studio. It is best to check current system requirements and supported operating systems directly for the respective product instead of relying solely on a manufacturer overview.

  • First consider whether you want to produce, perform, or DJ. KOMPLETE, MASCHINE, and TRAKTOR solve different tasks.
  • For software instruments, check the required player or full version as well as the integration into your DAW.
  • When looking at hardware, compare connections, power supply, space requirements, and the controls you actually need often.
  • For DJ hardware, clarify in advance which TRAKTOR version, which operating system, and which additional audio hardware fit your setup.

Native Instruments is particularly well-suited for musicians and DJs who understand software as a playable instrument and do not want to hide the computer behind the largest possible hardware surface. Getting started is easy when the product family matches the task. Conversely, anyone exclusively looking for universal DAW control or a completely manufacturer-independent plug-in workflow should compare the integrations and license conditions very carefully.
