If you want to shape the MS-20 sound directly using the controls and patch points, the full-size, monophonic analogue synthesiser Korg MS-20 FS offers a reissue of the instrument first introduced in 1978. The circuitry closely follows the original; additions include MIDI, USB and two switchable filter versions. The packaging and operating manual also reflect the original edition.

Sound generation uses two oscillators and ring modulation. High-pass and low-pass filters with resonance are available for shaping the sound and can be driven into self-oscillation. You can switch between the early and late MS-20 filter types. The envelope generators have delay and hold functions; the VCA retains the original basic design and has reduced noise.

In the semi-modular design, the basic signal paths are already connected internally, so you can play and change sounds without patch cables to begin with. The patchbay lets you selectively add to or change these connections using the ten included patch cables. The printed diagram on the control panel shows the signal paths and helps you follow the synthesis routes.

The External Signal Processor (ESP) can use the pitch or volume of an external audio source to control the synthesiser. A MIDI input and a USB port are available for integration into a MIDI or DAW setup. Signal input and output, as well as a headphone socket, allow you to connect external audio signals and output the synthesiser's sound.

With 37 keys, analogue sound generation and an accessible patchbay, the instrument suits setups where you want to play monophonic sounds and shape the signal paths yourself. The MIDI and USB connectivity is just as relevant as the choice between the two filter versions.
