When a full-range system needs support in the bass range, a separate subwoofer can be added without changing the role of the top cabinet. The passive 18-inch subwoofer for JRX full-range systems, the JBL JRX-218S, is designed for use with models such as the JRX215 and JRX212. According to the product specifications, its M118-4 woofer reaches a lower cutoff frequency of 34 Hz.

The speaker handles 350 watts of continuous power and 1,400 watts of peak power at 4 ohms. You need an external power amplifier to operate it; 350 to 700 watts at 4 ohms is recommended. Two parallel Speakon connections make it easier to integrate into the signal chain and connect another speaker.

When pairing it with a top cabinet, the active crossover should be set at around 100 Hz. This assigns the bass range to the subwoofer, while the full-range system handles the higher frequencies. The maximum sound pressure level is 133 dB peak; sensitivity is 98 dB (1 W/1 m).

The enclosure is made of 19 mm-thick MDF and covered in felt. A steel grille protects the driver, while sturdy steel handles make transport easier. With the integrated pole mount, you can place a top cabinet on the subwoofer using an optional speaker pole.

The JRX-218S is suitable for mobile PA systems and permanent installations that call for a passive 18-inch subwoofer with 4 ohms, Speakon connections and a pole mount. When choosing one, make sure you have a suitable power amplifier and use the recommended crossover setting with the top cabinet.
