American DJ Ruby Royal

When a laser needs to respond to music without a separate DMX programme, built-in sound and show modes are useful. The American DJ Ruby Royal projects 20 red, blue and magenta laser patterns onto the dance floor, wall or ceiling. Three operating modes – Sound Active, Show and DMX – cover both stand-alone operation and integration into a lighting setup.

Two laser diodes, each rated at 150 mW, produce the effects: one red diode and one violet-blue diode. The projected patterns appear in red, blue and magenta. The unit is FDA-approved in the USA. When positioning it, take care with the direct laser beam: align it so that neither the audience can look into it nor the beam can hit anyone. 20 pre-programmed patterns are available for projection.

In Sound Active mode, the projector uses built-in programmes that respond to music. Alternatively, in Show mode, you can select a pre-programmed show for stand-alone operation or a Master/Slave configuration. Six DMX channels are available for external control; you can set the DMX address using the rear control panel. These can be used to control the lasers, patterns, movement, rotation and zoom, among other things.

The digital display and four-button menu are used for setup and address selection. A 1.8-degree stepper motor moves the projections. A 6.3 mm jack input is provided for the optional UC3 remote control; the remote control is available separately. The display can be rotated by 180 degrees to keep it readable depending on the mounting position.

For connecting to other devices, the Ruby Royal has 3-pin DMX inputs and outputs, as well as IEC power connections for linking the power supply. Up to 18 Ruby Royals can be daisy-chained via the IEC connection. The metal housing is fan-cooled; a power switch and safety hook are located on the rear. The included mounting bracket makes installation easier; a mounting clamp is not included. For overhead mounting, the manual requires secure attachment and a suitable safety cable.

With a weight of 3.5 kg and a power consumption of 17 W, the projector is suitable for mobile DJ setups and smaller stage or club setups. Automatic voltage adjustment supports operation on power supplies from 100 to 240 V. DMX, sound and stand-alone operation make it suitable if you want to use pre-programmed laser patterns or control the movement via a DMX controller.
