When microphones, instruments and playback devices all need to run through a compact analogue console, the right inputs and separate output paths are essential. The Tascam M-164FX is a 16-channel analogue mixer with an integrated effects processor for stage submixes, home recording and smaller PA systems. Six mic/line channels and five stereo channels accommodate a range of signal sources.

Channels 1–6 each have an XLR microphone input and a balanced 6.3 mm jack line input. Switchable 48-volt phantom power supplies suitable condenser microphones; a switchable 80 Hz low-cut filter with 12 dB attenuation reduces low-frequency interference. For tone shaping, a 3-band EQ with frequencies of 100 Hz, 2.5 kHz and 12 kHz is provided, each with a ±15 dB range.

The five stereo channels offer a range of connections: channels 7–8 and 13–14 use balanced jack sockets, 9–10 use unbalanced RCA sockets, and 11–12 also use RCA. On channels 9–10, the input can be switched to RIAA phono for turntables. For a playback device with a mini-jack output, there is a 3.5 mm stereo connection for channels 15–16 on the top of the unit.

The built-in stereo effects processor offers 16 presets, including reverb, delay, chorus, flanger, chorus+room and rotary speaker. Two aux sends are available for connecting external effects or creating monitor mixes. Aux 1 can be switched between pre- and post-fader; Aux 2 is post-fader. Channels 1–10 can send signals to the aux sends.

For mixing, there is a stereo main bus and a stereo subgroup, each with separate faders. The subgroup can also be routed to the main bus. Both buses have stereo and mono outputs; the subgroup connections are pseudo-balanced jack sockets. The main bus is also available as an unbalanced RCA output. A 2-band EQ for the stereo master operates at 100 Hz and 12 kHz, each with a ±15 dB range.

The headphone output has its own level control; for monitoring, you can choose between the stereo master, subgroup and Aux 1. Angled level meters make it easier to read levels at the console. The unit is powered by the supplied PS-1225L AC adapter. This model does not have a USB audio interface; this feature is included with the M-164UF variant.

With its six mic/line inputs, five stereo channels, phono option, effects and separate bus outputs, this mixer is suited to small live setups, keyboard rigs and simple recording workstations. The range of connections and compact design are particularly useful when combining several different sources and routing them to separate outputs.
