In music lessons or at a desk, a clear layout that takes up little space and can be connected directly to a computer or MIDI device is important. The Roland A-500S is a USB MIDI keyboard with 49 velocity-sensitive keys and side-mounted connections, leaving space behind the keyboard for a monitor or laptop.

You can adapt the velocity response to your playing using twelve velocity curves. If you want notes to always be sent with the same value, regardless of how hard you play, you can set a fixed velocity value. The pitch bend/modulation lever adds two direct performance controls to the keyboard.

Dedicated buttons are provided for channel and programme selection; the octave buttons shift the playable pitch range. The Value rotary controller adjusts the currently assigned MIDI parameter, while the three-digit LED display shows the value. If required, you can configure the controller for volume or other MIDI control data, for example.

Via USB, the keyboard sends MIDI data to a computer. With MIDI interface mode enabled, it also routes MIDI data from the computer through its MIDI Out connection to an external MIDI device. Roland FPT is designed for low-latency MIDI transmission. The MIDI interface function requires a USB connection and MIDI interface mode to be enabled.

Separate connections for a hold pedal and an expression pedal are provided for sustain and expression control; the pedals are optional. The device is powered via USB, four AA alkaline batteries or a separately available 9 V power adapter. The stated battery life during continuous operation is approximately ten hours and may vary depending on use.

The original package includes the Cakewalk Production Plus Pack with three software instruments and the SONAR 8.5 LE recording software for PC. This lightweight 49-key keyboard is therefore suited to classrooms and computer setups where direct MIDI control without onboard sound generation is required.
