Product description Rode VideoMic Rycote
The original video microphone: at 25 cm long, the RØDE VideoMic was the first microphone in the world, back in 2005, that could simply be slid into a camera’s standard hot shoe and secured in place with its integrated knurled nut. The only change was made in 2015: since then, the VideoMic has used a Rycote double “Lyre” to isolate it from handling noise. This special thermoplastic suspension mount prevents handling noise and other mechanically induced interference from reaching the microphone’s sensitive 1/2" condenser capsule. A 3/8" thread is recessed into the base, allowing the VideoMic Rycote to be used on a tripod, handgrip or boom pole too.
It is powered by an optional 9 V battery, which lasts for 70 hours. The VideoMic Rycote connects to the camera via its TRS connection cable. The tip (“T”) and ring (“R”) of the 3.5 mm jack plug carry exactly the same signal, so the camera records in dual mono and the sound comes from the centre when the video is played back.
As a shotgun microphone with a supercardioid polar pattern, it has a relatively narrow forward pickup angle (approx. 45°). If you extend both hands forwards at a 45° angle, you can easily see which sound sources are within the pickup area and will therefore be recorded as a priority. The frequency response ranges from 40 Hz to 20 kHz. To make the sound leaner, you can switch on the integrated rumble filter on the back, which cuts in at 80 Hz and thus reduces unwanted low frequencies.
With particularly loud sound sources, there is a risk of overloading the camera’s microphone input. The battery compartment of the VideoMic Rycote contains two mini switches that let you reduce the microphone’s output signal by 10 or 20 dB across the board to prevent unpleasant distortion.
The VideoMic Rycote is supplied with a pre-fitted foam windshield. It is made in Australia by RØDE, and registered users receive a 10-year warranty directly from Rode.
