For multichannel recording, what matters is how many signals can be sent to and from the DAW simultaneously. The M-Audio M-Track 1212 is a USB audio interface with 12 inputs and 12 outputs, combining two switchable input paths with additional line connections.

Two XLR/jack combo sockets accept microphone or line signals. Two separate jack inputs are available for instruments; a switch lets you change between the respective sources. This means you can connect microphones or line-level devices and use the instrument inputs when needed, without restricting the signal paths to a single source.

For additional analogue connections, the interface has two DB25 connectors. The included breakout cables provide eight line inputs and eight line outputs respectively. The control panel can group signals into mixes and route submixes – useful when you want to organise multiple sources or monitoring paths in a recording session.

The converters support up to 32-bit and 192 kHz. Four LED meters, each with twelve segments, display signal levels. There is a 6.3 mm headphone output. The computer connection is via USB-C; the interface is also compatible with USB-A.

The software package includes Ableton Live Lite, AIR Creative Collection FX with 20 AU/VST effects, as well as AIR Strike, AIR Xpand!2 and AIR Mini Grand. This makes the interface suitable for a computer-based recording or production setup that requires multiple line signals, switchable microphone and instrument inputs, and separately routed mixes.
