Gemini Twin CD CDM-3600

When two CDs need to be mixed directly on one device, an integrated workstation saves you from needing additional players and cabling. The Gemini CDM-3600 combines two CD drives with a two-channel mixer and direct control of both decks. It plays audio CDs and CD-Rs and is suitable for DJ sets as well as CD playback in fixed installations.

The rubberised jogwheels can be switched between search and pitch-bend modes. In search mode, you can scan through tracks and fine-tune cue points while paused; in pitch-bend mode, you can temporarily adjust the tempo using the jogwheel or buttons. The pitch fader changes the playback speed by up to ±12%, while pitch bend makes a temporary adjustment of up to ±16%. Two jog modes and separate pitch control support the manual synchronisation of tracks.

For mixing, you can adjust the gain and a three-band equaliser for low, mid and high frequencies on each channel. The channel and crossfaders control the volume and transition between signals. With the fader-start function, you can start playback of a cued CD deck by moving the crossfader; sliding it back stops the deck and returns to the beginning of the track or the set cue point. Fader start via the crossfader thus combines the transition with playback start.

For monitoring, 6.3 mm headphone outputs are available on the front and rear panels. You can adjust the volume and cue/programme mix in your headphones. You can also connect microphones at the front or rear via XLR or 6.3 mm jack; the microphone gain is adjustable. Monitoring and microphone connections on both sides give you flexibility when positioning the unit.

The two RCA inputs can each be switched between phono and line. In phono mode, you can connect turntables with moving-magnet cartridges; also connect the earth wire to avoid hum. Connect line sources such as CD or MP3 players in line mode. Make sure the switch is in the correct position: a line signal connected to the phono input can overload and distort the channel. Two switchable phono/line inputs complement the internal CD decks with external sources.

For sound reinforcement, there are unbalanced RCA and balanced XLR master outputs, which can be used simultaneously and carry the same master level. A separate RCA record output is available for connecting a recording device; there is also a coaxial RCA digital output. Analogue master, recording and digital outputs cover a range of connection options.

Each deck features instant start, cue with monitoring and a RAM buffer for anti-shock playback. You can set a seamless loop between IN and OUT points on each side and recall it using Reloop. Single and continuous playback, auto cue, programmable track sequences and repeat of individual tracks or the entire CD help you control playback. Loop, Reloop and programmable track sequences complement the basic transport functions.

Direct track selection buttons and a +10 button make navigation easier; search is frame-accurate. The blue-backlit LCDs show information including track number, pitch value, playback status and a progress bar. Using the time display, you can switch between elapsed track time, remaining track time and remaining CD playing time. Clear track and time displays help you stay oriented during playback.

The CDM-3600 is suited to DJ setups where CDs need to be played and mixed directly with external phono or line sources. Its 19-inch format, versatile inputs and outputs, and integrated mixer section are key considerations when integrating it into rack or fixed installations.
