For recording vocals and instruments on a computer, you often only need two inputs and a direct way to monitor the signal. The Focusrite Scarlett Solo is a compact 2-in/2-out USB audio interface with one microphone preamp and a switchable line/instrument input.

Connect a microphone via XLR; switchable 48 V phantom power is available for microphones that require it. The 6.3 mm jack input accepts line or instrument signals. Use the Line/Instrument switch to match the input to the source. Two gain controls and their corresponding gain halo indicators help you set and monitor the input levels on the device.

When recording, you can monitor the input signal directly using Direct Monitoring, rather than relying on the delayed signal from the recording software. A large level control adjusts the monitor and headphone outputs; connect headphones via a 6.3 mm stereo jack. Two RCA outputs connect the interface to active monitors or another monitoring system.

The USB 2.0 connection also supplies power. Recordings are possible at 24-bit and up to 96 kHz. The software bundle includes Ableton Live Lite, the Focusrite Scarlett Plug-in Suite, the Novation Bass Station plug-in for VST/AU, and 1 GB of Loopmasters samples. The stated system requirements are Mac OS X 10.8 or later, or Windows 7 or later.
