Multitrack recordings with additional digital expansion require sufficient inputs and clear monitoring routing. The Focusrite Scarlett 18i6 combines eight analogue inputs with ADAT and S/PDIF for a total of 18 channels to the computer; six outputs send signals back. This makes the USB 2.0 interface suitable for recording multiple sources and expanding a studio setup with external converters or microphone preamps. 18 inputs via analogue, ADAT and S/PDIF
Two microphone preamps are located in the front-panel combo inputs 1 and 2. You can also connect line or instrument signals there; the instrument mode is selected in Scarlett MixControl. Switchable 48-volt phantom power supplies suitable microphones. Six additional balanced or unbalanced line inputs are provided as separate jack sockets on the rear panel. For further sources, an optical ADAT input and a coaxial S/PDIF connection are available. ADAT can transmit eight additional channels at 44.1 and 48 kHz; at 88.2 and 96 kHz, the number drops to four. Two digital channels are added via S/PDIF. This allows, for example, the integration of an external multichannel preamp without occupying the analogue inputs individually. Scarlett MixControl handles mixer and routing tasks between inputs, DAW playback and hardware outputs. You can assign signals to outputs and create up to six monitor mixes. The DSP monitoring routes input signals directly to the outputs, so you can monitor while recording without the additional monitoring latency of the DAW. Analogue outputs 1 and 2 feed studio monitors, for example; the knob on the front panel controls their level. Outputs 3 and 4 form a separate stereo headphone mix with its own volume control on the device. A stereo S/PDIF output is available for further digital outputs. The interface operates at up to 24-bit and 96 kHz. The clock can be synchronised internally or via an incoming ADAT or S/PDIF signal. To operate the unit, install the drivers and MixControl software before connecting and plug the device into a USB 2.0 port. It also requires the included power supply unit and is not powered solely via USB. External power supply required
The original software package includes a plug-in suite with compressor, equaliser, gate and reverb as well as the Xcite+ bundle with Ableton Live Lite, the Bass-Station synthesizer plug-in and royalty-free samples. The Scarlett 18i6 is a first-generation model; Focusrite lists it as discontinued and notes that no further development support is provided.
