Product description Focal Studiomonitor CMS50
Short listening distances place particular demands on the spatial imaging of a studio monitor. The Focal CMS50 is an active 2-way nearfield monitor whose design supports a listening position of around 50 cm; according to the product description, the stereo image is maintained even when the monitors are farther apart. Its 5-inch mid-bass driver reaches down to 55 Hz, while the inverted aluminium-magnesium tweeter reproduces high frequencies with precision.
The Polyglass mid-bass driver works alongside an aluminium-magnesium tweeter with an inverted dome design. Focal specifies a linear midrange and controlled bass reproduction. The high-frequency response helps you assess reverb tails and effects more accurately when listening. The enclosure is made of reinforced, damped aluminium and is magnetically shielded.
The rear controls let you adapt the monitor to the signal source, placement and room. Input sensitivity can be set to +4 dBu, 0 or -10 dBV; the level control ranges from -66 dB to 0 dB. With the 45, 60 or 90 Hz high-pass filter, you can configure the CMS50 for use with one or more subwoofers, or disable the filter. Full Range is intended for a stereo configuration without a subwoofer.
Further tonal adjustments affect the level below 450 Hz and from 4.5 kHz upwards. A parametric filter at 160 Hz with a Q factor of 2 offers adjustment steps from 0 to -6 dB, for example when placing the monitors on a desk or console surface. Standby and operating LEDs, as well as an audio clip LED, indicate the status; a separate on/off switch and a voltage selector are also included.
The monitor can be connected to different audio sources via balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA inputs. The choice of connection and level adjustment make it suitable for studio setups with professional or unbalanced signal paths. Compact placement, rear-panel adjustments and the option of adding a subwoofer are also important factors in your selection.
