Product description Edirol R-4

For location shoots and mobile multitrack recordings, it often matters that several signals can be recorded simultaneously and missed cues can still be captured. The Edirol R-4 is a portable four-channel recorder with an integrated WAVE editor, built-in stereo microphones and a 40-GB hard drive.

Four analogue inputs with XLR and jack connectors record microphone or line signals. The inputs can be switched in pairs between MIC and LINE; phantom power for XLR microphones can be switched separately for channels 1/2 and 3/4. For spontaneous stereo recordings, built-in omnidirectional condenser microphones are also available.

The recorder saves linear WAV files at 16 or 24 bit and 44.1, 48 or 96 kHz. Depending on the recording mode, you can create individual mono files, one or two stereo pairs, or a four-channel WAV file. Certain modes are restricted when recording at 96 kHz; mono recordings with three or four channels and two stereo pairs are then unavailable. The built-in microphones and digital input also do not support all multichannel modes.

If a cue starts unexpectedly, the pre-recording buffer can help: depending on the recording settings, the R-4 can save up to 29 seconds before you press the record button. A switchable limiter in the analogue input stage protects against signal peaks. Bear in mind that pre-recording also uses power in standby mode.

WAVE editing functions are available for editing directly on the device. The display and jog/shuttle dial let you navigate to specific points in recordings and edit them; the jog dial also offers seven speed settings for fast-forward and rewind. A marker function and A-B repeat help you navigate during playback.

The effects include shelving EQ, a 3-band parametric EQ, a 6-band graphic EQ, noise gate, enhancer, compressor and de-esser. One effect can be used per track; the effect status and parameters can be set for each track. Effects are unavailable in 96 kHz mode.

The features include built-in stereo speakers and an adjustable headphone output. Line outputs in jack and RCA formats, as well as coaxial digital inputs and outputs, let you integrate the recorder into other audio setups. You can transfer projects and WAV files to a computer via the Type B USB port; the R-4 is recognised as a USB mass storage device. The power adapter is recommended for operation with a computer.

A CompactFlash slot provides additional removable storage and supports Type I cards from 32 MB to 2 GB. The L connector can start and stop recording when used with a compatible LANC device. It does not transmit timecode; synchronisation between the recorder and video device may drift during long recordings.

The 40-GB hard drive holds up to 58 hours, depending on the recording format and settings, at 16 bit/44.1 kHz, or up to 17 hours at 24 bit/96 kHz. The device can be powered by an adapter or eight AA batteries. For mobile multitrack and video recording, the R-4 is a good fit if you want to use several microphone or line signals, built-in stereo microphones and editing functions directly on the recorder.
