For multitrack recording, what matters is how many signals you can record simultaneously and send to separate outputs. The Edirol FA-101 is a FireWire audio interface with up to 10 input and output channels at 44.1 to 96 kHz; at 192 kHz, it operates with six recording and six playback channels. Conversion is 24-bit.

Two front-panel XLR/TRS combo sockets accept microphone or line signals. The XLR inputs support switchable 48 V phantom power, while the balanced TRS inputs are designed for line signals. Input 2 can be switched to Hi-Z, for example for a guitar connected directly. Input controls and level indicators help you set the recording level.

On the rear are six more balanced TRS inputs and eight balanced TRS outputs. Inputs 7 and 8 have their own level control; they are also suitable for devices with a lower output level, such as CD players or MIDI sound modules. These two inputs and outputs are unavailable at 192 kHz.

For low-latency monitoring, Direct Monitoring mixes input signals with computer playback. You can adjust the monitor volume on the unit; under Windows, ASIO 2.0-compatible programs can also control the volume, panning and muting of the inputs. A headphone output with its own volume control is also provided. The level at the rear main outputs is not interrupted when headphones are connected.

Optical digital inputs and outputs compliant with IEC 60958 complement the analogue connections; MIDI input and output are also provided. The digital connections support 44.1, 48, 88.2 and 96 kHz, but not operation at 192 kHz. FireWire (IEEE 1394) connects the unit to the computer. Bus power is available only via a 6-pin connection; with 4-pin FireWire, you need the power supply. Even with a 6-pin connection, an external power supply may be required, depending on the computer.

The FA-101 is designed for older computer environments: in its original system profile, Edirol lists Mac OS X 10.3.4 or 10.3.3 with the FireWire update, as well as Windows XP Home or Professional. Modern computers using FireWire adapters cannot automatically be assumed to be compatible. Before use, check the available FireWire connection and driver support on your computer.

With its many analogue connections, MIDI and optical digital I/O, this interface suits older studio or live setups where several signals run in parallel. The key considerations when choosing it are the number of channels you need, the desired sample rate and a suitable FireWire environment.
