Product description Denon DN-C640

In installations with changing audio sources, a CD player that can also access shared network folders can be useful. The Denon DN-C640 is a 1U network CD player with slot-in drive that plays audio CDs and data discs and plays files from a network share via Ethernet.

The drive reads standard 12 or 8 cm CDs, as well as CD-R/RW and DVD-R/RW or DVD+R/RW. Supported formats are CD-DA, WAV/PCM, MP3, MP2 and WMA. There are restrictions for data discs: CD-Rs must be finalised, and only the first session is read on multisession discs. Supported file systems are ISO 9660 Level 1 and 2, Joliet, and UDF 1.50 and 2.00. Up to 999 files per disc and eight folder levels, including the root directory, are supported; the device does not recognise double-byte character sets.

You can connect the player to a computer via the rear RJ-45 port, using a company network, a home network with a router or switch, or a crossover Ethernet cable for a direct connection. It can play compatible audio files from shared network folders and transfer files from disc to a network drive. You can select files on the device using the integrated network browser and front-panel controls. The network connection supports DHCP; alternatively, you can set the IP address, subnet mask and gateway manually. You also need to configure the share name and login details for network shares.

The integrated web interface lets you control the player from a computer on the same network, including front-panel functions and presets. You can also create M3U playlists and upload and download lists there. For external integration, a serial RS-232C interface and a parallel D-Sub connector are also provided. RS-232C and parallel control support integration with media control systems and installations with fader start.

Playback functions include programme playback with up to 99 tracks, random playback, and single, all and A-B repeat. Playback speed can be adjusted by up to ±12%; Key Lock disables the controls. Skip Back replays an adjustable section, while End Monitor plays the last few seconds of a track for checking. Finish Mode can be set to Stop, Next, Recue or Continuous; an EOM indicator signals the end of a message. Auto Cue and Cue to Music complement the functions for controlled starting and searching for the beginning of the music.

For connection to a mixer or audio system, there are balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA analogue outputs; the levels of the balanced outputs can be adjusted using trimmers. The RCA outputs include a fixed and a variable level. Digital connections comprise a coaxial RCA output and a balanced XLR output; you can select between the S/PDIF and AES/EBU signal formats. A level-adjustable headphone output is located on the front. Analogue and digital outputs make it easier to integrate the player into different audio setups.

The supplied RC-1061 IR remote control operates the device functions, including Pitch-Control. A 230 V power supply for 50 Hz and a power consumption of 25 W are specified. With a 19-inch rack size and 1U, the DN-C640 fits into permanent installations, broadcast and event racks where disc and network files need to be available via local or external control.
