If two speaker channels are to operate separately or a single speaker needs more power in bridged mode, the power amplifier must match the speaker connection and impedance. The American Audio VLP-1000 is a two-channel PA power amplifier for fixed installations and sound reinforcement that can be operated in stereo, parallel or mono bridged mode.

In stereo mode, it delivers 500 W RMS per channel at 4 ohms or 330 W RMS per channel at 8 ohms, each measured at 1 kHz and 0.1% THD. In bridged mode, the specified output is 820 W RMS at 8 ohms; this figure applies at 1 kHz and 1% THD. The choice of operating mode depends on the speaker setup and the desired signal routing.

For connection to mixers, crossovers or equalisers, balanced XLR and 6.3 mm jack inputs are provided for each channel. The jack inputs accept balanced and unbalanced signals. Speaker outputs are available as Speakon and binding posts. You can set the input sensitivity using a selector switch; a ground lift switch can help with hum or interference.

Integrated high-pass and low-pass filters help adapt the signal to the connected speakers. A limiter limits the input level, while the clip limiter also protects against clipping. Two temperature-controlled fans dissipate heat. Signal, clip and protection status indicators help you monitor the operation of both channels.

With its 19-inch, 2U housing, the power amplifier fits into a suitable rack. It is suitable for DJ and PA setups where you want to select the channel power, operating mode and connections to suit the speakers. When planning your setup, take the speaker impedance and the power rating specified for the operating mode into account.
