When two microphones, guitars and a stereo source need to be mixed together, a clear channel layout matters. The Allen & Heath ZED-6 is a compact six-channel analogue mixer for musicians, small venues and home studio setups. Two Hi-Z instrument inputs accept guitars directly, while the XLR main outputs send the stereo signal to a PA or other audio equipment.

Each of the two mono channels combines an XLR microphone input with a jack socket for line or instrument signals. The switchable Hi-Z mode lets you connect guitars directly; separate DI boxes are not required. The GSPre preamps are designed for low noise and ample headroom. A globally switchable 48-volt phantom power supply is available for condenser microphones.

Each channel has a two-band EQ for shaping the signals. The mono inputs also feature a low-cut filter, which reduces low-frequency interference in the microphone signal. Use the gain, level and pan controls to mix the sources into the stereo bus. The stereo inputs also have a two-band EQ, which is fixed on these channels. Channel-specific PFL monitoring routes the respective signal to the headphone output, whose volume is controlled separately.

The Main Mix fader is 60 mm long. Two XLR sockets output the left and right mix; an eight-segment LED meter shows the signal level. The robust housing and compact format fit on a small workstation or in a mobile live setup. The analogue signal path also means that the mixer itself has no USB or computer connection for recording. You therefore need a separate audio interface to record directly to a computer.

With two microphone/line channels, two stereo inputs and direct guitar connections, the model is suitable for small live mixes, rehearsals and analogue studio setups.
