When mixing, a nearfield monitor helps you assess details in the arrangement and low-frequency range right at your workstation. The active, two-way Akai RPM800 with an 8-inch woofer uses separate amplifier sections for the woofer and tweeter and covers a frequency range of 38 Hz to 30 kHz.

The Class A/B bi-amping amplifier delivers 80 watts RMS to the woofer and 40 watts RMS to the tweeter. The 8-inch woofer features a Kevlar cone and rubber surround; the tweeter uses a silk dome. The rear-firing, flared bass reflex port supports low-frequency reproduction.

Rear-mounted controls let you adapt the monitor to its placement: Proximity Control lets you reduce the low-frequency range, and you can also choose between bass roll-off at 80 or 100 Hz. A midrange boost and ±2 dB HF trim provide further adjustment. The bass reduction offers two settings of 2 or 4 dB.

For connecting a mixer, interface or other audio source, there are XLR, balanced 6.3 mm jack and RCA inputs. The included isolation pad decouples the monitor from its supporting surface, reducing the transmission of structure-borne sound. Magnetic shielding and integrated high-frequency protection are also included.

The cabinet is designed to minimise resonance and sound coloration. A recessed amplifier, external heatsink and 14-gauge wiring to the drivers complete the design. Protection features include power-on and power-off delays, switchable overvoltage protection, an external mains fuse, output current and temperature limiting, and an infrasonic filter.

The RPM800 suits a studio or DJ setup that calls for an active single monitor with separate amplifier sections, multiple connection types and adjustable room tuning. The rear-mounted tone controls are particularly useful when you want to adapt the bass and treble response to the monitor’s placement.
