Akai MPK25

If you play beats directly using pads while also controlling melodies on a keyboard, clear access to both ways of working matters. The Akai MPK25 combines 25 keys with 12 MPC pads and is designed for MIDI control of music software and external sound generators. The controller does not produce its own sounds.

The semi-weighted keys respond to velocity and Channel Pressure. Pitch and modulation wheels, along with transport buttons, complement the playing feel and control of recording or sequencing software. You can play drums and samples on the pressure- and velocity-sensitive pads; four pad banks provide space for up to 48 pad assignments.

Twelve assignable Q-Link knobs and four buttons are available for controlling software parameters. Use the two controller banks to switch between assignments and access additional parameters. You can edit settings and MIDI assignments directly on the device using the display and rotary encoder with Enter function.

MPC Note Repeat and MPC Swing support rhythmic playing: Note Repeat repeats pad notes at the selected time division, while you adjust the swing amount and timing. The integrated arpeggiator plays held notes as a rhythmic sequence. Tap Tempo and Time Division let you select the tempo and grid; Full Level and 12-Level change the pads' velocity response.

The MPK25 transmits MIDI data via USB and also draws power from it. Alternatively, you can power it with an optional power supply and connect it to external devices via its five-pin MIDI connections. The rear panel also features one sustain and one expression pedal input. The pedal functions are assignable; to use the controller with MIDI software, you need to set it up as a MIDI input in the software.

Ableton Live Lite Akai Edition production software is included. The model suits mobile and compact computer setups that require a 25-key keyboard, MPC pads, knobs and transport control. USB and classic MIDI connections also make it a suitable choice for setups with external MIDI devices.
