Product description Zoom Handy Video Recorder Q4

For concert recordings, sound matters just as much as the picture: the Zoom Q4 Handy Video Recorder combines a wide-angle camera with an integrated X/Y stereo microphone. It records video in Full HD at 30 frames per second and saves the audio separately in WAV at up to 24-bit/96 kHz or as AAC.

The two microphone capsules are arranged in a 120° X/Y configuration and primarily pick up sound from the camera side. A shared stereo mini-jack input is available for external microphones or line sources and can supply plug-in power. The input gain can be adjusted; automatic or manual level control, a peak LED and a low-cut filter help you monitor the level and reduce low-frequency rumble. A windscreen is also included.

The 2-inch colour display can be detached and flipped open. This lets you check the frame even when the recorder is attached to a tripod or an action camera mount. The viewing angle is adjustable; the Auto, Concert Lighting and Night scene modes adapt the recording to different lighting conditions. For video, you can choose 1080p/30, 720p/60, 720p/30, or WVGA at 60 or 30 frames per second.

You can transfer files via USB Mini-B or use the Q4 as a USB audio interface or webcam. As an audio interface, it operates at 16-bit and 48 kHz; in webcam mode, WVGA or 720p video with 16-bit audio at 48 kHz is available. The USB mass storage and audio interface functions are also supported with the iPad. A Micro-HDMI output sends the video signal to an external display; the output can be set to NTSC or PAL. The combined line/headphone output has its own volume control.

Recordings are saved to SD, SDHC or SDXC cards with a capacity of up to 128 GB. According to the operating specifications, the lithium-ion battery lasts for up to three hours at 720p/30; at 1080p/30, it lasts around two hours. You can charge the battery via USB or with the optional AD-17 power adapter. For fixed positions, the housing has a standard tripod thread and is compatible with three-prong action camera mounts.

With separate audio and video options, a detachable display and connections for external devices, the Q4 is suited to concert recordings, interviews and video recording with direct monitoring. It is suitable for musicians, journalists and video bloggers who want to record audio and video together on the go and then edit the footage on a computer or use the device as a webcam via USB.
