Product description Zoom H4n

When ambient recording and external microphones need to be combined in a session, separate four-channel recording is useful. The Zoom H-4 N records its built-in rotatable X/Y stereo microphones alongside two external inputs, and is also suitable for multitrack recording with instruments.

The microphone capsules can be mechanically set to a recording angle of 90 or 120 degrees. The narrower angle focuses the stereo image more, while the wider one captures a broader sound field. An M/S decoder is available for alternative microphone techniques. A large, backlit 1.9-inch LCD helps you monitor recording and levels.

For external sources, the recorder has two XLR/6.3 mm combo jacks for microphones, instruments or line signals. The inputs provide a choice of 24 or 48 V phantom power. An additional 3.5 mm stereo input is designed for external microphones with plug-in power. You can monitor or pass on a signal via the adjustable 3.5 mm line/headphone output; an integrated mono speaker allows you to check recordings quickly on the device itself.

In 4CH mode, the device records the internal microphones and both external inputs simultaneously on separate tracks. MTR mode is designed for building up songs step by step: you can record tracks one after another, overdub and edit them. High-impedance inputs allow you to connect an electric guitar and electric bass directly. Built-in studio effects include compression, limiter, reverb, delay and guitar or bass amp simulations.

WAV recording is possible at up to 24 bit and 96 kHz; alternatively, the H-4 N saves compressed MP3 files. WAV files include timestamps and are BWF-compatible, which supports synchronisation during post-production. Auto-record starts recording when a set signal level is reached. Pre-record keeps up to two seconds of audio ready in advance, or up to one second at 96 kHz or in 4CH mode. Track markers make it easier to find important points again.

For editing and practice, variable playback speed, pitch adjustment, loop playback and a mono mix function are available. A low-cut filter reduces low-frequency noise such as wind or handling noise. Via USB 2.0, you can connect the recorder to a computer as a 2-in/2-out audio interface or for data transfer; USB operation can be powered via the bus.

Recordings are stored on SD or SDHC cards with a capacity of up to 32 GB. Two AA batteries power the device on the go; the stated recording time is around six hours in normal operation and up to eleven hours in STAMINA mode. This power-saving mode restricts the available functions. Alternatively, the device can be powered by a 5 V, 1 A mains adapter. According to the product information, the rubberised, shock-resistant casing also reduces handling noise; a thread allows you to mount it on a tripod.

This makes the H-4 N suitable for mobile recordings, rehearsals, interviews and song sketches that call for internal microphones, external sources or multitrack overdubs. Four-channel recording and instrument inputs also make it interesting for musicians looking for a battery-powered recorder with a USB interface, effects and direct monitoring.
