Product description Tascam TA-1VP

If vocals or a solo instrument need to be pitch-corrected during recording, the Tascam Vocal Processor TA-1VP can process the signal in real time. The rack unit combines Antares Auto-Tune Evo and microphone modelling with dynamics, EQ and de-esser modules for studio and live applications.

Pitch correction can be adjusted to suit the key and the desired effect: 25 pre-programmed scales can be modified and saved as presets. By adjusting the correction speed, you determine how quickly the pitch is brought closer to the selected scale. As well as vocals, the unit can process solo instruments; you should select the appropriate input type for this. Periodic signals are suitable for pitch detection, but complex sound sources such as a string sound played in unison are not.

With microphone modelling, you can select a source microphone and a desired microphone type, and adjust the proximity effect. The available models include specific microphone models as well as general types; models for drums and telephone are also available. Analogue tube saturation adds another dimension to the sound processing. How the microphone model can be used depends on which microphone was used for recording and how far away the source was recorded.

For dynamics, there is a compressor with Threshold, Ratio, Attack and Release controls, a variable knee curve and an independent gate. The gate operates as a downward expander and can reduce background and breathing noise. The de-esser processes sibilants; Threshold, Ratio, Attack, Release and the variable high-pass frequency can be adjusted.

The parametric EQ has two independent bands. Depending on the selection, each band offers high- or low-pass filters at 6 or 12 dB, shelving filters with variable slope, band-pass, notch and fully parametric bell filters. For double tracking, the processor can automatically create a track: it is either mixed into the main output or sent to a separate output for further processing.

You can access the key modules directly using the controls on the front panel; a 2-line display and LED indicators provide information about levels and processing. Presets for different vocal styles as well as instruments and percussion are already included. You can save and recall your own settings. You can control all adjustable module parameters in real time using a MIDI controller, and save or load settings and presets via MIDI data.

For direct microphone connection, there is an XLR input with switchable 48 V phantom power and a switchable 20 dB pad. Alternatively, you can use the balanced line input on the rear panel; the microphone and line inputs cannot be selected for processing at the same time. The outputs are balanced jack connections. The coaxial S/PDIF output carries the main signal on the left and the double-track signal on the right, with a fixed 44.1 kHz sampling rate.

The TA-1VP fits in a 19-inch rack and can also be used as an insert processor in a mixing console or between a microphone and a mixer input. This makes it suitable for recording setups and live racks where pitch correction, microphone modelling and other vocal processing are to be combined in a single hardware unit.
