If you want to record songs as multitrack recordings without a computer running, a standalone recorder with a control surface and mixing section is useful. The Tascam DP-03 SD records up to two tracks simultaneously to SD or SDHC cards and plays back eight tracks in parallel. Recordings are made at 44.1 kHz and 16-bit; a separate stereo master track is available for mixing.

There are two balanced XLR inputs for microphones, with switchable phantom power. Both inputs also have balanced 6.3 mm jack connections for line signals. Input A can be switched to high-impedance guitar mode, allowing you to connect an electric guitar or bass directly. Two built-in omnidirectional condenser microphones are suitable for spontaneous stereo recordings, such as rehearsals or musical ideas.

When mixing, you control the eight playback tracks using dedicated level faders and channel controls for pan and effect send. Each track also has a two-band EQ and can send a signal to the built-in stereo reverb processor. Once your mix is ready, you can record it to the dedicated stereo master track and process it there using mastering effects such as EQ, compression and normalisation.

Editing is also done directly on the device: tracks can be copied, moved, cut or muted, among other things; a multi-level undo/redo history helps you reverse changes. The bounce function lets you combine several tracks onto one or two tracks, freeing up space for further recordings. Markers make it easier to find parts of a song again. Auto-Punch-In/Out records a marked section during playback without you having to start the process manually.

Via USB 2.0, you can back up and restore projects, as well as import or export WAV files. An RCA stereo line output routes the signal to monitors or an amplifier; a headphone output with level control is available for monitoring. A tuner and metronome are built in. A footswitch can be connected to the remote input; the three-button RC-3F is available as an option, and its functions are assignable.

The DP-03 SD is suited to songwriting, demos and multitrack recording when you want to handle recording, editing and mixing on the device. You need an SD or SDHC card to use it; a 4 GB SD card is included. Its power supply, compact dimensions and nine 45 mm faders make it a standalone recording solution for a desk or small project studio.
