When editing tracks or plug-ins, you often have to switch between the mouse and keyboard. The USB-powered AI Knob on the Steinberg CMC-AI puts key Cubase parameters at your fingertips: point the mouse cursor at a supported control and adjust its value using the large rotary knob.

For example, you can control mixer faders, EQ gain controls and FX send levels without assigning them separately first. The Lock button keeps the selected parameter assigned to the rotary knob, even when you move the mouse cursor. You can control automatable parameters in the Cubase project window and in compatible VST 3 plug-ins.

For other tasks, you can switch between three operating modes: in Volume mode, the AI Knob adjusts the master level; in Jog mode, you move the project cursor. Pressing the rotary knob opens the Browse function for selecting presets and sounds; use the arrow buttons to navigate through the displayed entries.

The device has ten colourfully illuminated rubber buttons. Four of these are assignable function buttons to which you can assign Cubase key commands. By default, they are assigned to Save, Undo, Open Mixer and Redo. The device is powered via USB; a Ready LED indicates when the controller is connected to the computer.

The CMC-AI is designed for Cubase control and is offered with Cubase AI 6 and PD Editor. The stated system requirements apply to this older software version and the CMC hardware. For Cubase setups with a compatible computer system, the controller is particularly useful if you want to operate parameters directly on the device, adjust the master level or project position, and access selected key commands.
