Roland TR-1000 Review

With the TR-1000, Roland returns to a drum machine with genuine analogue sound engines after more than 40 years. However, it is not a reissue of the TR-808 or TR-909. Analogue circuits, ACB models, FM and VA synthesis, PCM sounds, and a comprehensive sampler work together here under a unified operational concept.

The result is Roland's most sophisticated rhythm machine to date. With a price of nearly 2,700 euros, the Roland TR-1000 is clearly aimed at producers and live performers who use their drum machine as a central instrument. We have taken a look at how well it succeeds in balancing a classic TR workflow, deep sound design, and modern production. This also includes the extensive system update to version 1.20.

Massive housing, mature user interface

Right from unboxing, it is clear that the TR-1000 is not meant to be a handy groovebox for your backpack. The device measures 486 × 311 × 125 mm and weighs 5.5 kg. The aluminium surface and steel housing leave a solid impression, and the internal power supply eliminates the need for an external power brick. Active cooling is not necessary, as the machine operates silently.

The extra space is used sensibly. Ten track faders, numerous rotary knobs, six encoders below the OLED display, and the classic row of 16 illuminated step buttons offer significantly more direct access than many more compact drum machines. The headphone output is easily accessible on the front panel and features a dedicated volume control.

Despite the many controls, the TR-1000 is not a completely menu-free instrument. Its sound engines, effects, and modulation possibilities are simply too extensive for that. Many detailed parameters are set via the display and the six underlying encoders. Changing pages, shift functions, and selecting different modules are therefore part of the workflow.

After a short familiarisation, however, it becomes clear that Roland has distributed the most important operations sensibly across the surface. Sound selection, tuning, decay, layer mixing, effects, fader movements, and sequencer actions remain directly accessible. Frequently used parameters can also be assigned to the knobs. One knob can control up to four parameters simultaneously as a macro, each with an individually defined value range.

Genuine analogue 808 and 909 circuits

The main theme of the TR-1000 is the 16 analogue sound engines, which Roland developed based on selected circuits from the TR-808 and TR-909. It includes ten analogue 808 and six analogue 909 instruments. Since these are physical circuits, each analogue generator is only available once within a kit.

Some of the analogue instruments have fewer parameters than their digital counterparts. This is not a drawback, but follows their circuit design. An analogue cowbell or rimshot has little to edit, whereas the ACB variants can be bent much further.

The analogue 808 bass drum is particularly rewarding. Its decay extends into a range where the sound practically stops and can be used as a deep bass tone. In this respect, the TR-1000 goes beyond the behaviour of a vintage TR-808. Combined with tuning, envelopes, filters, and sequencer automations, you can quickly create bass drum and bass hybrids.

Sonically, the analogue voices deliver exactly what you would hope for from this part of the machine. Transients feel immediate, deep drums have real substance, and the levels react vividly to changes. What is crucial, however, is not a blanket "analogue sounds better" statement, but rather the choice between two different tools. The analogue circuits provide the immediate base character, while the digital models offer more parameters and a wider range for extreme modification.

ACB, FM, VA, PCM, and samples

Beyond the analogue circuits, the TR-1000 offers a very broad digital sound palette. This includes 75 ACB sounds, seven FM generators, virtual analogue oscillators, and 340 PCM instruments. In addition, there are 2,121 included samples.

The updated ACB models are not just based on familiar Roland classics. Many have additional parameters that allow them to operate far beyond their historical predecessors. For the 808 and 909 models, the possibilities range from fine pitch control to extended envelopes and deliberately unstable or exaggerated sound variations. Other Roland machines like the TR-606 and CR-78 are also covered digitally.

The FM generators are particularly suitable for metallic percussion, sharp transients, and unusual drums. With sine, triangle, square, sawtooth, supersaw, and noise, VA generators are also available for basslines, drones, and additional layers.

PCM instruments and samples are treated separately by the TR-1000. The internal PCM sounds do not occupy user sample slots and have their own sound parameters. The actual sampler generator is more flexible and can process longer files, loops, and your own recordings.

Four layer tracks and six individual tracks

The TR-1000 has ten main tracks. The first four of these are layer tracks, each of which can run two sound engines. This allows for a total of up to 14 voices within a pattern.

On a layer track, for instance, an analogue bass drum and a PCM attack, or two differently processed loops, can be combined. Both layers can be triggered together and faded using the mix knob. Alternatively, you can program them independently within the same track.

Filter and amp are available separately for both layers. Other areas, including compressor and track effect, are shared. The concept still offers plenty of scope for complex drums without losing the overview of a ten-track mixer.

The fixed labels such as BD, SD, or LT are only for orientation. Any track can basically hold any other suitable sound. The machine does not force a rimshot onto the RS track or a bass drum sound onto the BD track.

Since version 1.20, both generators of a layer track can also be positioned independently in the stereo field. Two samples or oscillators panned against each other thus create wide layers, even though they remain organizationally within a single track.

The TR-1000 contains 64 GB of internal memory. 46 GB of this are available for your own samples, recordings, and edits. WAV, AIFF, and MP3 files can be imported; the system also supports FLAC and M4A. Internally, the sampler operates at 48 kHz and 16 bits. A single recording can be up to 16 minutes long.

Sampling is performed via the two rear inputs, the USB audio interface, or via internal resampling. Sources can be the entire mix, selected tracks, or individual instruments. Recording can be triggered manually, by threshold, or synchronized to the pattern start. This makes internal resampling particularly straightforward.

Loops can be adapted to a project with BPM synchronization, time stretching, and independent pitch shifting. Several stretch algorithms are available for different material. Heavy time stretching remains audible, as it is with virtually every hardware sampler. The more complex ensemble algorithm is also limited to two simultaneous instances within one pattern.

Samples can be chopped into up to 16 parts. The TR-1000 can detect even intervals or transients; the slice points can then be corrected manually. Each slice has its own settings for pitch and time stretching. This means a single segment can be radically lengthened or detuned while the rest of the loop remains unchanged.

In slice mode, the 16 step buttons are used to play the segments directly. What is still missing is a free "lazy chop" mode where the slice points are tapped in directly during playback. The existing slicing is precise but requires slightly more preparation.

TR sequencer without a rigid grid

The sequencer retains Roland's classic TR-REC input. Steps are set directly via the 16 buttons; alternatively, instruments can be played in real-time. Recording can be quantized or free.

A pattern comprises eight variations with 16 steps each, as well as four fills. Variations can be chained. For longer arrangements, there is a song mode in which patterns and variations are played and repeated in a defined order. This is particularly helpful when both hands are needed on a synthesizer, mixer, or other instrument during a performance.

Velocity, probability, micro-timing, substeps, and cycle conditions are available per step. For example, an event can be set to sound only in certain pattern passes. Automations can be recorded live or set for individual steps.

We particularly liked the timing options at the track level. Shuffle, start offset, play direction, rotation, and track length can be set separately for each track. A clap can be pulled slightly ahead of the beat, while the snare sits behind it and a shaker gets its own shuffle. This creates loose grooves without shifting all instruments out of the same grid.

The TR-1000 does not offer different track speeds. Polymetric structures are possible via differing track lengths, but true dividers or multipliers for playback speed are missing.

Morph slider, snapshots, and performance functions

The morph slider is one of the most striking new controls. It can execute multiple knob movements across different tracks simultaneously. You can determine which parameter should change and to what extent.

Depending on how it is programmed, the slider can control a clean transition, open multiple filters, lengthen decays, or completely break down the pattern. Up to 16 different morph states can be prepared per pattern. The function is therefore much more than a simple crossfader between two scenes.

Snapshots store up to 16 combinations of assigned panel parameters for each track. These states can be recalled immediately via the step buttons. This allows an instrument to change its tuning, effect configuration, and timbre with the press of a button. Snapshots can also be recorded into the sequencer.

A true chromatic keyboard mode is still missing. Tone sequences can be created via tuning automation or suitably prepared snapshots, but they are less comfortable than on a groovebox with a scale mode. Furthermore, the step buttons do not respond to velocity; instead, there is a mode with 16 fixed velocity levels.

For live use, there are mutes, rolls, and step loops. If a spontaneous edit fails, the instrument, kit, or pattern can be reloaded from the saved state. This takes some of the risk out of executing major adjustments during a performance.

Effects and analogue sound shaping

Each track has an extensive signal chain. The sound engine is followed by a multimode filter or four-band EQ, an amplifier or transient shaper, compressor, LFO, and track effect. Reverb and delay work as send effects. There are also digital master effects and an analogue effect section.

The analogue area combines a state-variable filter with a drive circuit. Filter and drive can be used individually or together. The drive is well-suited for making a clean mix denser and more punchy. The filter, in turn, introduces a certain amount of self-noise. If you prefer to keep the sound clean, simply route the relevant tracks around the analogue section.

Digital sound design is also plentiful. Crusher, saturator, isolator, frequency shifter, ring modulator, chorus, phaser, and various delays are available. Via internal sidechaining, tracks can be lowered based on triggers from another track. The volume of the trigger track does not matter, so even silent triggers can serve as control signals.

What version 1.20 adds

The system update to version 1.20 is significantly more extensive than a mere bug fix. Four new master effects, in particular, expand the possibilities for lo-fi sound design and live manipulation:

  • SP-303 Vinyl Sim
  • SP-404 Vinyl Sim
  • Cassette Sim
  • DJFX Delay

The SP-303 Vinyl Sim combines background noise, pitch instability, and heavily colouring compression. It noticeably glues the mix together, especially with sample chops and layered drums. The SP-404 Vinyl Sim focuses more on the frequency response of vinyl playback and is easily adjusted via the morph slider.

Cassette Sim offers parameters for tonality, tape age, noise, drive, and wow and flutter. DJFX Delay expands the well-known SP-DJFX approach with delay tails that continue after releasing the button. As a result, stutters and abrupt loop edits sound less cut-off.

Even more important are the new LFO modes. The LFO can be set to restart with every note, complete a single cycle or half a cycle, and remain at the end value. With a freely selectable start phase, it can partially act as an additional envelope. Sample & hold generates stepped modulations that can be re-sampled at every sequencer step if desired.

Version 1.20 also introduces two new ACB generators called 808 Bass Line and 909 Bass Line. Both are prepared for tonally played bass drums and bass sequences, start perfectly tuned to C, and feature significantly extended decay ranges. The 808 variant offers an excite parameter, while the 909 version includes a drive parameter.

Other improvements concern gain staging, higher levels for the USB audio stream, fast on/off switches for track effects, and a MIDI mode with an individual channel per track. Sample slices can thus be controlled externally via chromatic MIDI notes. The update expands the machine in important areas and shows that Roland is treating the TR-1000 as an expandable platform.

Connections for studio, modular system, and stage

The rear panel shows how seriously Roland takes the use of the device in larger setups. Alongside the stereo mix output, there is a separate stereo output for the analogue effect section. Ten additional jacks serve optionally as individual outputs or analogue trigger outputs.

There are also separate trigger input and output, filter CV input, clock output, and a dual mono/stereo audio input. External signals can be sampled or sent through the TR-1000's effects.

MIDI In, Out, and Thru are also present. The outputs support DIN Sync, thus establishing a connection to older Roland machines. The pedal connection can be used with a switch or expression pedal. Start and stop commands as well as assigned panel parameters can thus be controlled without a free hand.

USB-C transmits MIDI and multi-channel audio to the computer. Memory sticks or compatible MIDI controllers can be connected via USB-A. Samples, projects, and backups can be imported or exported via this port.

The jack outputs are unbalanced. Furthermore, the USB connection to the computer requires a driver and does not work as a universal Class-Compliant interface. A direct digital connection to a smartphone or tablet is therefore not supported.

The TR-1000 app as a detailed overview

The free TR-1000 software displays parameters, instruments, mixers, and kits on a larger screen. Changes made to the hardware appear directly in the app and vice versa. Samples can also be managed, trimmed, and transferred between the computer and the drum machine.

During the familiarisation stage, the software is particularly helpful because it clearly displays the extensive structure of generator, filter, amplifier, compressor, LFO, and effects. Once you are familiar with the machine and have prepared your own knob assignments, you can largely remain on the hardware.

The app is therefore not a necessity, but a sensible addition. After the update to system version 1.20, the current version of the software should also be installed via the Roland Cloud Manager.

Where the TR-1000 sets its limits

The price is the most obvious hurdle. At nearly 2,700 euros, the TR-1000 competes not only with other drum machines but also with complete production systems. MPC and Maschine, for example, offer broader functions for melodies, chords, and arrangements. However, they work more screen- and software-oriented.

Also, size and weight should not be underestimated. In the studio, the TR-1000 needs a fixed spot and for transport, a suitable case. It is not an "in-between" groovebox that just fits somewhere in your bag.

Despite its large range of functions, the tracks remain monophonic. Melodies are possible via samples, VA generators, tuning automation, and snapshots, but they are not the focus of the instrument. A chromatic play mode, different sequencer speeds per track, and a spontaneous lazy chop mode would improve this area.

Operation is more direct than on many machines of comparable depth, but not easy in every situation. If you want to exhaust all generator parameters, routings, and modulation targets, you have to deal with display pages and shift functions. The good layout of the knobs pays off primarily once you have prepared your own kits and macros.

Conclusion on the Roland TR-1000

The Roland TR-1000 is neither a luxuriously equipped TR-8S nor a revived TR-909. Its real concept consists of bringing together genuine analogue Roland circuits, deeply editable digital sound engines, and a modern sampler in one playable instrument.

Particularly convincing is how well the different sound sources can be combined. An analogue bass drum can be layered with a sample or FM transients on the same track. This is followed by filter, envelope, compressor, modulation, and effects before the sound is output via digital or analogue master processing. Despite this depth, the classic step sequencer remains accessible at all times.

Version 1.20 adds noticeable value to the machine with the vinyl and cassette effects, the expanded LFOs, new bass-line generators, and improved MIDI operation. These are features that truly make a difference when programming and performing.

Who is the TR-1000 suitable for?

The TR-1000 suits producers, sound designers, and live performers who want to cover the rhythm section of their setup largely with a single piece of hardware. It is particularly strong in electronic music, for complex drum layering, extensive pattern modulation, and for connection with modular systems or older DIN Sync equipment.

Those looking primarily for an uncomplicated 808/909 emulation will find a much cheaper solution with a TR-8S or a smaller drum machine. For complete songs with chords, polyphonic melodies, and linear arrangements, an MPC or comparable workstation is more broadly positioned.

As a high-quality, uncompromisingly equipped rhythm machine, the TR-1000, however, has a very clear profile. It rewards thorough familiarisation with exceptionally direct access to analogue drums, digital synthesis, samples, and sequencing.
