Roland's SH-4d is the answer to that question.

This desktop synthesizer module is packed with in-depth sound design tools that combine vintage analog sounds with cutting-edge digital synthesis, making it a flexible instrument that will delight groovebox players and synthesizer specialists alike.

The SH-4d's 5-voice architecture includes four independent synth parts and a dedicated rhythm part, culminating in an impressive 60-voice summing polyphony. Each of these five parts can be assigned its own effect, with more than 90 built-in effect presets, from iconic Juno chorus to fast-paced delays and spacious reverbs.

Eleven oscillator models range from analog and vintage sample-based PCM synthesizers to futuristic morphing wavetables and cross-FM synthesis, paired with a versatile drum synthesizer and a Drawing mode that lets you design entirely new waveforms.

Each drum kit accommodates up to 26 instruments, with 49 preset kits available and another 64 slots for creating your own kits. In addition, each kit features dedicated LFOs as well as two overlaid waveforms that can be further shaped and refined to personalize percussive sounds.

A multimode ladder filter is deeply woven into the SH-4d's sound, interacting with the pre-filter's Drive and Resonance controls to create rich harmonics and flexible filter textures.

The SH-4d is equipped with a highly detailed user interface, yet remains remarkably accessible. Each section is carefully divided to provide direct control without being so cluttered as to hinder creativity, yet dense enough to avoid endless menu diving.

In addition to the extensive input/output section, which quickly fits the SD-4D into any setup, this synthesizer can be powered by USB-C power supply, as well as 4x AA batteries or rechargeable batteries, offering the ultimate in mobility.
