Product description Roland SD-50
For mobile arrangements, backing tracks and spontaneous recordings, the Roland SD-50 Sound Module combines sound generation, a USB audio and MIDI interface, and a player for audio files and MIDI files in one device. It is part of the Mobile Studio Canvas and can be used with a computer or on its own with USB storage.
The internal sound generator provides 16 parts and 128-voice polyphony. You can choose from 1,125 Tones and 32 Rhythm Sets, including GM2- and GS-compatible sounds as well as three solo sounds such as shakuhachi, trombone and violin. Reverb, chorus and mastering effects are available for sound processing; three Studio Sets can be saved in user memory.
As an audio interface, the model offers a microphone input with an XLR connection and phantom power, as well as a switchable 6.3 mm input for guitar with Hi-Z or line signals. The additional stereo mini input accepts line signals. The device transmits audio via USB at 16 or 24 bit and 44.1 kHz; AD/DA conversion operates at 24 bit and 44.1 kHz. Stereo outputs via RCA and a stereo mini headphone socket are provided for monitoring.
The integrated player plays WAV, AIFF and MP3 files, as well as Standard MIDI Files in formats 0 and 1, from USB storage. You can control playback and A/B loop, repeat, tempo and key via the transport section. Center Cancel reduces centrally positioned vocals for karaoke applications. V-LINK support and MIDI IN and OUT sockets provide additional control options.
The Mobile Studio package includes Cakewalk SONAR 8.5 LE as recording software for Windows. The software is compatible with Windows Vista and Windows 7; an upgrade to SONAR X1 Studio or SONAR X1 Producer was also available. When connected to a computer, the USB-COMPUTER port provides USB MIDI and USB audio, while the separate USB-MEMORY port supports USB flash storage.
The SD-50 can be powered via USB bus power, six AA batteries or a 9 V power supply. The stated battery life is approximately four hours with NiMH rechargeable batteries and three hours with alkaline batteries; it depends on the conditions of use. With a weight of 800 g and compact dimensions, the device is suited to mobile setups with a laptop or USB player where sound generation, playback and basic recording functions are needed together.
