Rehearsals, concerts or spontaneous musical ideas can be captured on the spot with a portable recorder. The Roland R-09HR records stereo in WAV or MP3 and has a built-in condenser microphone. Its 24-bit/96 kHz recording is suitable for uncompressed recordings at a high sample rate; alternatively, you can choose space-saving MP3 files.

For external sources, there is a stereo microphone input with a 3.5 mm jack and plug-in power, as well as a line input in the same format. The input levels are variable and can be monitored using the level display. The limiter and automatic gain control (AGC) help to manage significant volume fluctuations. When using the line input, the internal and an external microphone cannot be used at the same time.

The large OLED display shows levels and peak values; you can listen to recordings directly through the built-in speaker. The included wireless remote controls transport functions, volume and input level, so the recorder can remain in the desired position during recording. The remote control and monitor speaker make recording and monitoring easier without having to keep repositioning the device.

Recordings are made to SD or SDHC cards with a capacity of up to 32 GB; SDXC cards are not compatible. Recording times depend on the format, resolution, card and number of files. For a 1 GB card, for example, the stated guide figures are 27 minutes of WAV at 24-bit/96 kHz or 392 minutes of MP3 at 320 kbit/s. WAV and MP3 in several quality settings let you choose between high resolution and longer recording time.

System version 3.0 adds a Rehearsal function for automatically adjusting input sensitivity, the Trim and MP3 conversion editing functions, and ECO mode with up to 7.5 hours of battery-powered recording. Improved monitoring volume is also included. Rehearsal and Trim support level preparation and simple file editing directly on the recorder; playback effects are limited to files below 88.2 or 96 kHz.

Playback offers four reverb types and a speed adjustment from 50 to 150 per cent. The metronome and tuner are available from system version 2.0. Via USB, the device transfers files as a mass storage device; the Pyro Audio Creator LE software for editing on a computer is also included. USB 2.0/1.1 with a Mini-B connector is for file transfer, not for use as a multi-channel audio interface.

With its internal microphone, external mic and line inputs, and compact design, the recorder is suited to mobile stereo recording, for example at rehearsals, concerts and on the go. The combination of portable operation and a choice of recording formats is practical when you want to record independently of a computer and transfer files via USB afterwards.
