Product description Roland MV-8800

In beat-based productions, samples, MIDI arrangements and multitrack recordings often come together in one project. The Roland MV-8800 brings these workflows together in a standalone sampling and production station: you can use it to edit sounds, record sequences, mix audio and master songs.

For programming, it offers 16 velocity-sensitive pads with aftertouch, a colour LCD and eight mixer faders. You can add a mouse and an external VGA monitor; the mouse is included, while the monitor is optional. VGA lets you view your work on a larger screen and edit parameters with the mouse. Fader and MFX knob movements can be automated.

The sampler has up to 64 voices and loads samples, audio phrases and instruments into projects. The internal 40 GB hard drive contains a sound library with drum kits and instruments such as pianos, strings, guitars, brass and synth basses. The kits include sounds modelled on classic drum machines, including the TR-808 and TR-909. One distinctive feature in the effects section is the Analog Modeling Bass, which lets you use the multi-effects processor as an SH-style bass synthesiser.

In the sequencer, you can organise MIDI and audio material into songs or patterns. Songs support up to 128 MIDI tracks, eight audio tracks, and pattern, tempo and mute control tracks. Patterns provide up to 64 MIDI tracks, plus one audio track and one mute control track each. Real-time and step recording, audio recording, groove quantisation and automated workflows support arrangement work. Audio material can also be adjusted in tempo in real time, with pitch editing available too.

For editing and mixing, three effects sections plus mastering tools are integrated: a multi-effects processor with 25 types, chorus, reverb and a Mastering Tool Kit that operates in mastering mode. These include a parametric EQ, enhancer, expander, multiband compressor, limiter and soft clipper with dithering. Modelled effects include SRV reverb, SDD-320 chorus, SBF-325 flanger, BOSS BF-2 and HF-2, and the RE-201 Space Echo.

An internal CD-R/RW drive supports burning and managing CDs; USB is used to transfer data between the unit and a computer. The MV-8800 can also import certain AKAI-MPC2000 programme and sound files. For visual applications, BMP and JPEG images can be controlled via the Pix-Jam function using the sequencer or pads; the V-LINK function is for controlling compatible EDIROL video devices.

This makes the unit suitable for beat-based productions that bring sampling, MIDI sequencing, multitrack recording and internal effects processing together in a hardware environment. VGA and mouse control, MIDI connections, and phono, microphone and line inputs also make it interesting for setups with external instruments and turntables.
