Product description RME Fireface UC

When an interface needs to bring together analogue sources, digital devices and MIDI in a compact setup, flexible connections and direct monitoring matter. The RME Fireface UC with 18 input and 18 output channels connects to Windows and Mac computers via USB 2.0 and operates at up to 192 kHz. You can select the appropriate Windows or Mac firmware directly on the device.

The eight analogue inputs are split between two Mic/Line combo sockets, two front-panel Line/Instrument inputs and four rear-panel Line inputs. The two microphone preamps offer digitally controlled gain of up to 65 dB and individually switchable 48-volt phantom power. Switchable reference levels are available for the rear inputs and outputs, allowing you to adapt the interface to different studio levels.

TotalMix serves as a 648-channel matrix mixer with 42-bit internal resolution for direct monitoring and complex signal paths. Inputs and playback channels can be freely routed to the 18 physical outputs. Up to nine independent stereo submixes are possible; you can record output and submix channels without external cable connections. The control interface can be operated remotely via MIDI, including in stand-alone mode.

The eight analogue outputs comprise six balanced line outputs on the rear panel and the unbalanced stereo headphone output on the front. This uses a Hi-Power output stage and can also serve as a line output. Hardware-based peak and RMS meters monitor 54 audio channels, while SteadyClock processes external digital signals and suppresses jitter.

For digital connections, there is an optical ADAT input and output that can alternatively function as an optical S/PDIF pair, as well as coaxial S/PDIF, which also supports AES/EBU-compatible signals. At 44.1 and 48 kHz, the optical connection carries up to eight ADAT channels; at higher sample rates, the channel count decreases due to S/MUX. Wordclock BNC and two MIDI inputs and outputs round out the connections. With a compatible ADAT converter, the number of analogue inputs and outputs can be expanded to 16 in total.

The device can also operate without a connected computer once configured. The display and endless encoder on the front allow direct operation; saved settings are reloaded when the device is switched on. The minimum selectable buffer size is 48 samples under Windows and 14 samples under Mac OS X. Actual latencies, however, depend on the computer and application and are not guaranteed.

The Fireface UC is suited to studio and live setups where eight analogue inputs and outputs, digital expandability, MIDI and independent submixes are required. To connect it to a computer, you need a USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 port; the minimum system requirements listed for this product include an Intel Core 2 Duo and Windows XP SP2, Vista or Windows 7, or Intel Macs with Mac OS X 10.5 or later.
