Product description RME Fireface 800

When several microphones, line signals and digital devices need to be integrated into the studio at the same time, a large number of independently routable channels is essential. The RME Fireface 800 is a FireWire audio interface for recording and playback with up to 28 channels in each direction and sample rates of up to 192 kHz. It combines analogue inputs and outputs with ADAT, S/PDIF and MIDI.

Four microphone preamps with XLR inputs are located on the front panel; their associated line inputs and an adjustable instrument input complement them. There are also eight balanced line inputs and eight balanced line outputs. The analogue inputs and outputs can be used simultaneously, and their reference levels can be switched via software. However, the two ADAT I/Os are not active at 176,4 and 192 kHz.

The DSP-based TotalMix mixer freely routes inputs and playback channels and provides up to 14 independent stereo submixes. Settings are stored in the internal flash memory and loaded when the unit is switched on. Once configured, the device can also operate without a computer as a mixer or converter, for example as a headphone mixer, monitoring mixer or microphone and instrument preamp.

Wordclock I/O, coaxial S/PDIF and optical ADAT or S/PDIF connections are available for digital synchronisation. SteadyClock processes incoming clock signals and reduces jitter; the sample rate can also be changed in real time by up to ±4 per cent. The optional TCO module can be retrofitted via the rear slot and is used for synchronisation to LTC and video.

Two FireWire 800 ports and a FireWire 400 connection allow multiple devices to be connected and linked; the second 800 port can also serve as a hub. Bi-Lingual Mode supports compatibility with FireWire 400. Several Fireface 800 units can be operated in parallel via a FireWire connection. Up to three devices simultaneously are supported according to the documented driver specifications.

The driver specifications cover Windows 2000 SP4, XP, Vista and Windows 7 in 32-bit and 64-bit versions, as well as Mac OS X from version 10.3 for PPC and Intel. Windows supports ASIO 2.0, GSIF 2.0, MME and WDM; WDM offers stereo and multi-channel operation. Core Audio and Core MIDI are listed for Mac. Both platforms support hot-plugging. This makes the interface suitable for existing FireWire studios and setups where many analogue and digital channels and flexible hardware routing are required.
