On some older turntables, the cartridge can only be screwed onto the headshell from underneath. The Ortofon VinylMaster Red is suitable for this type of mounting and combines it with a nude elliptical stylus for playing records.
As an MM cartridge, it has an output of 3 mV and connects to a phono MM input. The frequency range extends from 20 Hz to 23 kHz; the frequency response is specified as 20 Hz to 20 kHz at ±1.5 dB. The technical specifications also list a channel difference of 1.5 dB and crosstalk attenuation of 23 dB at 1 kHz and 15 dB at 15 kHz.
The recommended tracking force for setting up the tonearm is 1.5 g; the permissible range is 1.25 to 1.75 g. Tracking ability is 70 µm at the recommended tracking force, measured at 315 Hz. With a stylus compliance of 25 µm/mN, the cartridge is designed for very low-mass, low-mass and medium-mass tonearms.
The stylus tip has a radius of r/R 8/18 µm and a tracking angle of 20 degrees. The cartridge weighs 5 g and is 18 mm high, measured from the stylus tip to the top of the cartridge. The VinylMaster Red replacement stylus is available; changing to a VinylMaster Blue or VinylMaster Silver stylus allows you to upgrade the cartridge accordingly.
This makes the VinylMaster Red suitable for turntables whose headshell requires the cartridge to be screwed on from underneath, including compatible older Thorens models. Its MM design, tracking force and intended tonearm class help you check whether it is compatible with your turntable and phono input.
