Roland SP-404 MKII
A short snippet of sound, a field recording, or a drum loop can be the beginning of an entire track. The Roland SP-404 MKII captures such ideas as a sampler and effects unit, shapes them directly on the device, and brings them back out as patterns, loops, or live performances.
Cutting, shaping, and reassembling samples
The graphic OLED display shows waveforms directly on the device. You can set cut points using real-time or auto-chop, precisely correct them afterwards, and process the material with envelopes, pitch shifting, and time-stretching. This allows both long recordings and short drum sounds to be transformed into playable building blocks.
The project offers 160 sample slots, spread across ten banks with 16 pads each. With 16 GB of internal memory, 32-voice polyphony, and support for importing WAV, AIFF, and MP3 files, there is plenty of space for your own sounds and extensive performances.
Effects and resampling for your own sound tracks
The SP series thrives on direct sound processing. The SP-404 MKII features 41 multi-effects types, including Vinyl Simulator, DJFX Looper, Lo-Fi, Cassette Simulator, and Resonator. Multiple bus effects can be layered and their parameter movements recorded via motion recording.
Using the mic/guitar input, you can access 17 input effects types, such as vocoder, auto pitch, harmony, or guitar amp simulation. Resampling records the result as a new sample. This allows an individual layer to grow step-by-step from a simple initial sound without having to leave the creative workflow.
Pattern, Loop Capture, and DJ Mode
Beats are created via real-time loop recording or the TR-REC step sequencer. Patterns can be between one and 64 measures long, can be chained together, and work with either quantized or intentionally shifted notes. Pad Link triggers up to four samples simultaneously and is useful for combined drums, chords, or triggering effects.
Skip Back Sampling saves up to 40 seconds of the last LINE OUT signal, even if the actual recording had not yet started. Loop Capture records performances with effects in real time. The DJ Mode mixes two audio files or patterns and provides eight cue points per sample for direct access.
Audio, MIDI, and mobile power supply
To integrate into a setup, the sampler features balanced line outputs, line inputs, a mic/guitar input, two headphone connections, and MIDI via 3.5 mm TRS. USB-C transmits audio and MIDI with a computer or mobile device. The SP-404MKII app for macOS and Windows makes sample management, pad assignment, and detailed waveform editing easier.
The compact housing weighs 1.1 kg without the power adapter. It runs on the included power supply, USB-C bus power, or six AA batteries. This allows the sampler to be used at a fixed station in the studio or taken along for sessions, rehearsals, and live sets without needing a power outlet.
When does the Roland SP-404 MKII fit into your musical workflow?
The Roland SP-404 MKII is suitable for beatmakers, producers, and live acts who prefer to edit samples using pads, knobs, and effects rather than a mouse and multiple windows. It is also a great addition to synthesizers, turntables, grooveboxes, or a computer: record audio, edit it, organize it as a pattern, and route it back into your existing setup.
