Numark X9

Scratch mixes require a crossfader whose curve can be adjusted to suit your playing style. The Numark X9 is a digital 3-channel scratch mixer with BEAT-SYNC effects for vinyl, CD and other line-level sources. Its 24-bit signal path processes the audio signal digitally; connections for turntables, playback devices, microphones and various outputs make it the centrepiece of a DJ setup.

Each of the three channels has gain and a rotary 3-band EQ, whose frequency bands can be turned down to a full cut. There are also two assignable groups of three kill switches for the crossfader sides. This lets you remove individual frequency ranges from the mix with precision. The assignable D-Type crossfader is replaceable and reversible, and has a continuously adjustable curve: a smooth setting supports transitions, while a sharp curve is suitable for scratch cuts.

The effects section includes twelve digital 24-bit effects, including Vocoder, Tape Echo, Echo, Flanger, Phaser, Filter and two reverb types. FX Assign lets you choose whether to process a channel, a crossfader side or the master; the Wet/Dry control determines the effect level. You can set the tempo using Tap. Effects can also be previewed via the cue path before you switch them into the main mix. Tap-synchronised effects with cue preview combine timing with controlled previewing.

There are three switchable phono/line RCA inputs for turntables; two additional line inputs accept playback devices such as CD players or samplers. The phono inputs have grounding terminals. There are two 6.3 mm jack microphone inputs: the microphone channel offers gain, tone controls and an on/off switch, while an additional microphone input can be routed to channel 2. Switchable phono/line inputs make it easier to accommodate different sources.

For connecting to your sound system, there are balanced 6.3 mm jack outputs, as well as master, booth and record outputs via RCA. The headphone output is a 6.3 mm stereo jack; you can mix the cue and programme signals for monitoring. Separate master and booth controls, along with fader start outputs for compatible playback devices, add to the connection and monitoring options. Balanced master output and separate booth output suit setups with a main sound system and a dedicated monitor path.

With its phono, line and microphone connections, replaceable crossfader and integrated effects section, the mixer is suitable for vinyl-oriented scratch sets as well as setups with multiple playback devices. Three channels and extensive cue functions are particularly useful when you want to assign sources flexibly and preview effects before using them.
