Exactly what was missing

Drum machines are a dime a dozen. But what I was always missing was a machine with which I could mix thunderstorms of groove into the drums. Preferably raw and dark. Ideally as hardware, since screwing on hardware always delivers different results than pushing the mouse. The DFAM delivers exactly that, fully analog and raw, which is how I love it. There's little glitter and unicorn dust on it, but it pushes, romps and squeezes it's a real joy. The only drawback is the lack of "modern" interfaces such as Midi. I have a KORG SQ1, with which I can get the drummer neatly integrated, but this detour does not have to be in the year 2022 in my opinion. That was certainly a conscious design decision, but a somewhat awkward one. Especially since the commissioning of the SQ1 as the central for the DFAM in larger setups is as much fun as a root canal treatment. What is often criticized, namely that the sequencer has no reset (when stopped and restarted, the machine does not start at step 1, but where it last stopped), I consider a true blessing. Completely new and differently accentuated grooves often arise by chance. Of course you can record it like that and move it to another beat, but it's much more organic and you can still influence it directly. The DFAM is a box that you either sell again immediately because the setup is really old school or never again.

Lots of moog for the money

Moog DFAM - what do you get? You get two VCOs with triangles and rectangles and a really good FM, an 8-step sequencer with two CV tracks, two minimalistic envelope generators, and an LP / HP Moog ladder filter with resonance, but not level compensated, i.e. it becomes quite quiet when you turn up the resonance - just a classic Moog filter. The sequencer and the EGs only have triggers and no gate, so no sustain: only attack and delay, whereby VCA-Attack does not even have a potentiometer, but only two levels per switch. But that's all ok because it's supposed to be a percussive synth. For this you can also put the VCA-EG on the pitch of the VCOs using the +/- potentiometer - very cool. Without the patch panel, the thing would be a bit too limited because, for example, noise can only be turned in globally. As the first patch, the pitch track of the sequencer is almost always set to the noise level and the VCOs are separated from the sequencer pitch. In order to elicit something useful from the DFAM, one should definitely not be afraid of the patch panel. The DFAM runs in top form with further modular components - just a simple CV quantizer, an LFO, a trigger randomizer or a delay open up almost limitless possibilities. Moog could improve the DFAM even more if the sequencer were given a third "assignable" CV track and the VCA attack controlled via a potentiometer, there would be space.
