M-Audio X-Session Pro

If you want to control software mixers and DAWs using physical faders and knobs, the two-channel DJ mixer layout of the M-Audio X-Session Pro brings the most important controls together on one surface. The USB MIDI controller sends commands to compatible programmes; it does not process audio signals.

You can assign the controls to software functions using MIDI Learn. Each deck has volume and pitch faders, as well as Hi, Mid and Low knobs. Transport buttons control Start, Pause, Cue, rewind and fast-forward. You can use the headphone Cue buttons if your DJ software and audio setup support cueing. You can also assign the faders and knobs freely in software without MIDI Learn, provided it supports manual MIDI assignment.

The crossfader is suitable for transitions between decks and can also be assigned to other parameters, for example in a DAW. It sends normal and inverted MIDI values simultaneously. This allows a single movement to control two independent parameters in opposite directions. If the direction is not right for your DJ software, you can adjust the MIDI assignments using the M-Audio Enigma editor. Normal and inverted crossfader values offer different assignment options.

The computer connection is via USB, which also powers the device. No separate power supply is needed. Under Windows XP and Mac OS X, the controller is recognised as class-compliant; however, a driver installation is required for multi-client operation under Windows XP. USB transmits MIDI and powers the controller; you still need your audio setup for audio playback.

The rear panel houses the on/off switch, Reset and A buttons, and a Kensington security slot. The Reset and A buttons are used together to restore factory settings and should not be pressed accidentally. The Kensington slot allows you to secure the device using a suitable cable.

This model is suitable for laptop-based DJ and studio setups where you want to control software functions directly using 27 controls. The key factors are the MIDI assignment options available in your application, an available USB port and, for cueing, support from the software and audio hardware. Direct MIDI control via USB connects the mixer layout to DJ software, virtual instruments and DAWs.
