When monitoring in the near field, the balance between the low- and high-frequency ranges and the right placement determine how reliably you can assess the mix. The active 2-way studio reference monitor M-Audio BX8a Deluxe combines an 8-inch Kevlar woofer with a 1.25-inch silk dome tweeter and separate power amplifiers.

The power amplifiers deliver 70 watts for the low-mid frequency range and 60 watts for the high-frequency range. An active crossover at 2.2 kHz divides the signal appropriately between the drivers. The separate amplification of both drivers is matched to their respective operating ranges, allowing low and high frequencies to be reproduced precisely.

The conical Kevlar cone, heat-resistant voice coil and damped rubber surround are designed for controlled cone movement and operation at higher temperatures. A magnetically shielded silk dome with waveguide is used for the high-frequency range. FerroFlow cooling uses ferrofluid to dissipate heat. The Kevlar woofer and silk dome form the two-way system.

Connections include one balanced XLR input and one 6.3 mm jack input, which can be used in balanced or unbalanced mode. Both inputs can be used simultaneously. Parallel use of XLR and jack inputs makes it easier to connect different signal sources; the input level is adjusted using the rear volume control.

The MDF cabinet is internally braced and vinyl-laminated. A rear port supports the reproduction of very low frequencies below 30 Hz; rounded cabinet edges are designed to reduce edge reflections. The magnetic shielding is intended for use near computer or television screens. The shielding supports desktop use, while the rear port means that space must be left between the monitor and the wall when positioning it.

The monitor has a power switch, a power indicator, an external fuse holder and a voltage selector for 115 or 230 volts. Before switching it on, check that the selected voltage matches the power supply. The integrated protection features include RF interference protection, current limiting, over-temperature protection, protection against power-on and power-off transients, and an infrasonic filter. The voltage selector must match the mains voltage.

With its frequency response of 40 Hz to 22 kHz, separate power amplifiers and balanced and unbalanced connection options, the model is suitable for studio and desktop monitoring. For nearfield setups with XLR or jack connections, the correct voltage setting and the rear bass port should also be taken into account when positioning the monitors.
