At a multimedia workstation or in a small studio, a straightforward connection is just as important as suitable placement. The M-Audio Studiophile AV40 is an active 2-way desktop reference monitor pair with built-in Class A/B amplifiers: the left speaker houses the connections and controls, while the right speaker connects via speaker cable.

A 4-inch woofer/midrange driver with a polypropylene-coated cone and a 1-inch silk-dome tweeter divide the signal at 2.7 kHz. The OptImage-III waveguide supports spatial imaging; the magnetically shielded enclosure is designed for desktop use. A bass reflex port enhances low-frequency reproduction, while the switchable bass boost slightly lifts the low-frequency range.

The left speaker provides two line inputs of each type: RCA for left and right, and 6.3 mm TRS jack for left and right. Both input types can be used with balanced or unbalanced signals. An additional front-mounted 3.5 mm stereo Aux input accepts another audio source; the front-mounted volume control works with all inputs.

When you connect headphones, the speaker output is muted and the signal is routed to the headphone output. A power switch and a blue LED ring around the volume control are also located on the left monitor. Acoustic/adhesive pads are included for stable placement; when setting up, an equilateral triangle formed by the two speakers and listening position is recommended, with the woofer/midrange drivers as close to ear height as possible.

With 20 watts of continuous power per channel at 4 ohms, a specified frequency range of 85 Hz to 20 kHz and compact dimensions, the pair fits on a desk or in a small production setup. It is suitable for musicians and users looking for active nearfield speakers with RCA, jack and Aux connections, as well as a readily accessible headphone output.
