When producing music with software and external sound generators, it is useful to bring keys, pads and controls together on one device. The M-Audio Code 49 - White is a USB/MIDI keyboard controller with 49 keys, four freely assignable keyboard zones and numerous controls for DAW and instrument control.

The semi-weighted keyboard responds to playing dynamics and supports aftertouch. For drum sounds or samples, there are 16 velocity-sensitive, illuminated pads. An X/Y touchpad adds to the performance controls and, like the pitch and modulation wheels, can be assigned to your own functions.

For direct parameter control, the device has eight endless rotary encoders, nine faders and nine assignable buttons. The buttons can also trigger ASCII commands, such as keyboard shortcuts. You can use the transport buttons to control supported DAW functions; Mackie Control and HUI modes are provided for this. The controls can also be used with popular software such as Ableton Live, GarageBand, Logic, Pro Tools and Cubase.

The controller receives power via USB and sends MIDI data to the computer. For external MIDI hardware, there is one 5-pin MIDI input and one 5-pin MIDI output. Connections for sustain and expression pedals extend control while playing. The six-digit LED display shows values and settings.

The software bundle includes Ableton Live Lite and the Hybrid 3 and Loom instruments from AIR Music Technology. The Code 49 is suitable for setups where you want to combine a velocity-sensitive keyboard with direct DAW control, pad input and connections for external MIDI devices.
